DVD data disc

OK, Ive run out of HD space so Im burning a few films to DVD, or at least that was the plan.
Ive about 60 films all avi and divx all around 700 mb. So the plan was to purn 5 to each dvd. I dont need to play them in a dvd player, just want to put them into my pc so a data disc is grand.

Im on xp, usind DVD- and sonic MyDVD studio delux is the software that came with the pc.

I first tried to simply open the DVD drive and drag files across, this meant DLA (whatever that is) wanted to format the DVD, grand, I drag across the files and the PC crashes and the disc becomes corrupt.

I open sonic MyDVD and create a data disc project and it burns it then tells me after it finihed it couldnt perform the operation for an unknown reason.

I then realise I dont have divx codecs on this PC, didnt think it would make a difference but inststall them anyway. So I do another data disc project, it finishes and same error message comes up.
However this time 3 of the 6 movies work, one has the firse 10 min, the next only the first 10 seconds and while i can see the sixth when i trry to open it it says file not found.

So, what the fcuk is goin on. Ive done my nut in, anybody who can help me please do. The 6 films come to 3.8gb so its not a space issue. Is it the software, the hard ware, the discs, the films; what!?

youve got some burning time ahead of you! did you encode the iles yourself? If so, make sure the avi's play properly before you burn them. If they dont then they need the latest codecs www.divx.com otherwise just change your dvd burning application to nero or something.

Ive got a lend of them all on cd, i put them on my pc and they work fine, i now want to put them on dvd (cant afford to use up all that hd space and dvd is easier to transport than a rake of cds).
Nero you say, any particular product or just what ever free trial program is there?

Right as you say the right way would be to check the burning software itself first , so if you are looking for a ' free ' one check out here http://www.deepburner.com/ , heard good things about this though have not personally used it myself. Give it a try.

It sounds like crap DVDs. I had that same problem before with crap DVDs I bought from Peats. Out of a box of 25 I think maybe 7 burned properly (@ 1x).

What DVDs are they? If you can, burn at 1x, it's often more stable. And make sure you use Nero's 'Verify Written Data' feature. It takes a while but it's worth it because you can identify coasterrs immediately.

Agreed - sounds like crap media. Get some Verbatim/TDK/etc.

If not, update drive firmware, change burn software (nero burning rom is decent), check DMA is enabled for the ide interface (not PIO).
