Well considering its a approx a 12 hour flight it might be worth paying the
extra few quid to travel comfortably..

One thing to take into account is how cheap S.A is..

There are nearly 8 rand for every € and things are cheaper down there..

yep, SA is fantastically cheap. The food , drink, accomadation is first class and soooooo cheap you will not believe. Dont be worried about the expense, the costly part is getting there. Go for it, you will have a ball.

Flight wise, check out BA and Virgin - and see can you snag seats in their Premium Economy sections - well worth it for a 12 hour flight..much more room and comfort than standard economy. Booked well enough in advance you can sometimes get good deals on PE flights

Can't suggest anywhere to stay but I spent a week in Stellenbosch and it's quite a nice town. Go on the wine tour while you're there as it's rather good. I flew with SAA and the flight was quite reasonable (and the wine list was rather nice) but it was a few years ago. Beer and (good eating out) food is cheap so your costs won't mount up too much while you're there.
