Ive seen a few sites with links to IRC channels and when you press the link it prompts you to open IRC.
When IRC opens it connects straight to a certain server and joins a certain room, how do you do this?

To get it to work in Boards, all you need to do is to change the tags.
[a href="irc://irc.quakenet.org/boards.ie"]click here[/a]

ie; change the "a href" tags to "url" tags, and you get a boards.ie version
[ url="irc://irc.quakenet.org/boards.ie"]click here

Its fun pushing what you think you can do to the limit. Its what I love doing.

In a php board, it'd be
[ url=irc://irc.quakenet.org/boards.ie]click here

Basically no "" (quotation mark's).
