Text books say body temperature should be a fairly consistant ~37 degrees.

Just how fixed is this (ignoring daily gains / losses due to exercise, sleep, eating, drinking)? I measured my body temperature (mercury, orally, not after eating) a various times over a few days (I thought I had a fever the first day) and found a fairly consistant 36.1-36.3.

If i remember correctly, it's very rare for your body temp to be at 37 degrees exactly. Theres an upper limit and a lower limit (sorry dnt know the figures) and e.g. when temp reaches upper limit maybe during exercise bodys cooling systems kick in -body hair lies flat, blood vessels near surface dilate and you start sweating. If you stop exercising and cool down, this then brings the temp close to lower limit and body tries to reduce heat loss by making hairs stand up, arterioles constrict and you stop secreting sweat. Temp then goes back towards upper limit and cooling system kicks in again etc etc. Over a v long period of time this would average out at 37 degrees but temp is rarely static, its increasing or decreasing like other systems in body e.g. blood pH and Co2 conc. Dunno if that made sense or not

    Depends on genetics too.
The indians from Patagonia used to be able to live almost naked down in terria del fuego because thier core temperature used to vary rather than staying constant , some french researchers tired to replicate it but none could sleep properly in the same conditions. most of us should change over the 24 hours but not to the extent as those guys.

The 37 degree average comes from testing body temperature of thousands of people some of whom may be 36 degrees and some 38 degrees so that the average population mean works out at 37. It's the same as an average resting heart beat being considered "normal" at 72 BPM, few people have a resting heart rate of 72 BPM, it's simply the mean population value

When you measure your blood temperature, you have to factor in where it is measured. Your CORE temperature is on average 36.9 - but your mouth, rectum, ear and armpit will all report different values as there are slightly different cooling in those areas.

Temperature varies depending on your activity level, time of day and if you are slightly hypothermic (been out in the snow). Temperature also varies during the menstrual cycle in women.

For more information, check this link out:

Your temperature range is completely normal and although the variation is interesting, it is harmless.
