    i have a large directory of mp3s
    categorised and ordered into folders
when i scan these folders for mp3s with winamp i get 7200
when i check the root folders properties i get a total of 8700 files

is there anyway i can check the numbers of files, ie 7200 mp3s, 500 m3u 500 jpg etc without manually going thru each folder?
want to see what all these extra files are as i try to keep most of these folders clear

all of these mp3s are 100% legal and i own all original cds

If you want you could search the folders for *.mp3 and that would just return MP3 files from your collection of highly legal music. Then you can repeat for .jpg, .m3u etc.

Why dont you just browse to the root directory, hit f3 for find and let it find all files. Then just sort by file type and you can see a breakdown of how many files of each type there are by selecting all the m3u files etc...

In a dos shell, CD to the base directory and type dir /s *.mp3
The last couple of lines will tell you how many you have.

If you don't know what the 1200 files extensions might be this isn't a huge help I suppose.

If you do this kind of thing regularly, it might be worthwhile installing Total Commander. Its flat directory view would be very handy for seeing what files you have in all subdirectories of the current dir.
