DVD-R seen as only 3.9GB in Nero!

Hi all, I went to burn a DVD there and was surprised to find that nero only recognised it as having a capacity of 3.9GB, now it quite clearly says 4.7GB on the box (only brand new)

Is this a known issue? I have little experience burning DVDs, but I find it very surprising that nero of all things would be flawed, I tried a few discs from the box, all the same.

Anyone got any ideas?
PS I'm using XP, would that have anything to do with it?

Is your DVD drive made by NEC?

I couldn't get Nero to burn DVD-R disc's at all kept coming up with "illegal disc" did a little searching around found this bloke who writes his own fireware updates for NEC drives to fix this problem and voila it works perfectly now.

Do all the DVD-R from that batch show up the same size?

If you do decide to download a new firmware, be very careful.
I downloaded a firmware patch(from rpc1) to try make my laptop dvd drive region free but all it did was slow down the POST and bois startup on my comp. Then I downloaded the SLAVE firmware and it fixed it(although my drive is on master), but it's still not region free
Also I have some problems with nero... It only recognises my drive as capable of writing at 2x, but it is supposed to be 4x... It takes about 45 mins to write a dvd with nero.. And I wrote a dvd last night with TMPGenc dvd writing tool(i think thats what it is, it comes with TMPGEnc dvd author) and it only took less than 25 mins.

The problem is with some NEC drive's not NERO, you must have a better DVD drive!

My old NEC drive a DVD+RW ND-1100A would burn at 2.4x on 2x disc's.

My new NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG burns at 6.1x on 4x disc's.

I have never gotten Nero to work with my system,try using different software!
