Probably not the best forum for it but...
Is there any way to reduce your max bid without retracting it? i.e. I've made a max bid of 40 and the item is currently at 18 (I'm the hghest bidder), could I feasibly reduce the max bid down to 20? There's over 24 hours left in the auction in question

Have you seen the same item cheaper elsewhere?
If somebody else were to bid 22, would you at this stage rather not
    get the item?

If nobody outbids you, you'll pay 18, not 40.
When you place a bid, make it the highest you're willing to pay
for the item, you'll pay the minimum possible up to that price.

I'm aware of the principle of the max bid, but my money situation has..."changed" since I stated my max bid, and if I were to reach it I simply wouldn't have the cash now. It's not the end of the world or anything, it would just be handy if I could decrease it (You can increase your max bid when you're winning, but you can't decrease it)

As far as I know you can retract your bid, for e.g. 'enteering the wrong bid amount'. Procedure should be somewhere on the eBay site; try the Community pages or FAQs etc.

Quoting eBay's rules - looks like you're OK.
f you place a bid before the last 12-hours of the listing: You may retract that bid before that last 12-hours, if your situation meets the above description of exceptional circumstances. You will not be allowed to retract that bid during the last 12-hours of the listing.

    and then I think you're covered (loosely :-) ),
    by these "exceptional circumstances" )
You made a typographical error and entered the wrong bid amount. For instance, you bid $99.50 instead of $9.95. If this occurs, re-enter the correct bid amount immediately after you retract your bid. If you do not place another bid, the retraction will be in violation of eBay's policy and could result in your suspension.

    These rules are available at
    http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/bid-retract.html

You've a few hours yet, but you should hurry.

Hope it works out for you,
    Niall.
