Hi I was looking at the Argos web site and they have Sony 20Gb Hard Drive Walkman MP3 Item number 512/9443 for £ 149 after calling a few shops they have it in Liffey Valley for €214. Collecting it today.

Is that a good deal for it?

    Thanks

Yep, they were €399 before Christmas. Bought mine in the UK for the equivalent of €315.

Top quality piece of kit :D:D

I would have thought that was an excellent price considering most other highstreet outlets are charging €379 (AFAIK)

Can it directly encode to ATRAC via line-in? or do you have to use a PC?

    Hi

I tried the ring and reserve 01-2161616, the shop the retail park in Blanch has it, 669 is the store number. Also trieds Jervis, Illac and St. Stephens but didn't have any.

Or you can call any of the shops and ask them to check the computers for you, you can find the numbers in the goldenpages.ie

Hey if you can'f find 1 I can see l to you for €275 :):)

    Thanks

Is this the Sony HD1 model? If so that would explain the price as it has been replaced by the newer Sony HD3 model (which is out a few months now).

    Chalk,
Not sure I follow - does it have a line-in or not?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,239 ✭✭✭Gilgamesh

Argos is only offering the HD1 for this price, it isn't the newer HD 3, you can tell on the screen.
Also, Dec4, the HD series doesn't have a line in at all, only transfer through USB.
tbh I have the HD3 and it really doesn't matter much if you use MP3 or ATRAC as the files get encrypted on the drive anyway, and can only be downloaded back from the source PC, but silly, but hey, it is the biggest Music producing company in the world behind it.

still a great price. can also be used as an external HDD

i thought you were asking about whether or not youd have to convert all your mp3s to atrac.

i dont know if it has a line in

The Argos clearance sales are mega.
    I bought a LYra 20Gb Jukebox for 100 euro ,75% off.
Great piece of kit, better than an Ipod.

if anyone does buy one the software crashes on conversion and transfer to atrac. to fix this delete any codec u might have installed or specifically if ffs codec pack then go to start/ my programs/ ffs/ audio filter config and go to mp3 and change mp3lib to disabled. will then work a treat.

Was in the new Argos in Blackpool (Cork) a few days ago, the bargains available from the old catalogue are indeed very tasty...... ;)

Where is everyone getting these bargains in Argos, do u just look for the old catologue

Nope - each store has their own clearance catalogue (stuff they couldn't shift from last year) depends on what each store has left over. The one in Liffey Valley has a "catalogue" as you go in the door - it's about 20 pages of what they have left. Some of the offers are brill.

Just been on to two branches, Blanch and Nutgrove, and they don't have any left. They also both said that none of the shops have any left....Ah well....

If you are suing the supplied headpones then you might improve it with better earphones. I've read some reviews of these and some liked the sound some didn't. Same as all HD players though. They all colour the sound to some degree. Trying different earphones can make a big difference. Apologies if you've already tried this.

    Found this on another site

    related to the HD3

"The thing that really annoyed me when i got it was the sound was really low at max volume but if you search out there you will find a fix where you go into the service menu and turn off something called Sound Pressure Regulation and this will boost the sound by about 50%"

yep i know about that hack, need to be very careful another guy on avforums entered the 'audio' menu instead of 'others' and changed something now he cant hear anything.
the hd3 is imho at 215stg from amazon is a miles better player than an ipod. looks lovely in black 2.
new software allows drag and drop from windows explorer apparently.

I think all the players have their pros and cons. Theres no player that has it all IMO. At least not yet. They've all got shortcomings. Neither the Sony or iPod record for example.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

that is true, sony have taken a nice stab at it though, i think the hd1 was lauched to celebrate 25 years of the walkman and as such was the pinnacle. the new one has an aluminium case whereas the hd1 is mag.
the drm business is what killed it, sony have let up recently on this though but theres more to do.
