RFI Interference

I have a sony DVD surround sound system, sony 32'' tv, sky free to view receiver and dvd recorder. I also use one UHF aerial for TV3/TG4 andd one VHF aerial for RTE.

Powering up the surround sound system (don't have to play a disk) causes interference on both RTE channels only. All other viewing is perfect.

I have checked leads, screens etc, repositioned aerial and all obvious solutions to no avail.

    Has anyone any suggestions?

    1) take the offending surround sound system back to the shop since its obviously a pile of EMC directive non-compliant crap

    2) Get an outdoor aerial

    3) Wrap a couple of turns of the mains cable of the offending surround sound system around a piece of a ferrite (available in Maplin etc) It MIGHT reduce the interference

    4) Feed the offending surround sound system around from a different mains socket to the TV It MIGHT reduce the interference

You will probably find that your surround sound system also interferes with some FM radio stations on a nearby radio if it is causing hassle with Band 3 TV.

One thing you could look into is your TV aerial cable (assuming you are not using a settop aerial which would be asking for trouble of this sort) - your aerial cable may be poorly screened - letting in nearby interference. Try replacing it with 'CT100' type cable which has much better screening than the type often found in hardware outlets..

Thanks for the help. I've tried the ferrous coils and have used satellite cable to ensure proper screening.

I think I'll take the dvd back to the shop but it's out of warrenty so I don't know how I'll get on.

Would a masthead amplifier on the VHF aerial help?

    Unlikely

It would probably just amplify the interference
