creaking hinge and rocking on flat surface. The hinge is a recent development.
Got this 12" powerbook i Sept and have extended applecare - so no probs with warranty. Anyone else experienced this?

My GF had a torrid time with apple care in the past, a month waiting and refusing to tell her what the prob was. I really use my laptop 10 hours a day so I can't be without it for long.

Whats the best way to communicate with them? not sure I ever activated my applecare...

anyone even follow my rambling? ;)

I'm not too sure about dealing with Apple, but I have a 15" Powerbook that has developed a creak but not very often. It only creaks when opening the laptop, never while closing.. is it the same with yours?

Anyway it hasn't bothered me enough to claim on the warranty because I don't really want to be without the laptop for a few weeks while they fix it.. but my warranty will be up in April or May so maybe I should..

I've had an issue with rocking on a flat surface. You may have lost the little rubber "feet" that go on the 4 corners.

Just as an aside. I dropped mine from a 4 foot height last week. Powerbook was open and on at the time with iSight camera attached. It fell on it's "face".

Case bent on top right corner of screen and split apart on right front of keyboard. HD stopped, got a restart warning, restarted no problem, and have been using it since without a glitch. Rocks a bit more than it used to :)

    BTW, iSight OK as well.

as an aside if one day ur screen cracks for no reason other than a sticky hinge, expect a bill for 600-800 euro(even if under warranty). u have been warned.

in other words get it sorted now?

the creaking had been sporadic at best - but has become more frequent.

as for the rocking the actual laptop body isn't straight, the battery doesn't sit flush and if I push down on opposite corner (diagonally) there's give :(

I have heard that on the 12" power there is a problem with the heat warping the actual casing. I don't believe that apple are too quick to accept this as an issue

This has happened on mine aswell but only when its been on for long periods of time, it happens because the cooling system is at the hinge.
You can get lubricant for it off loads of mac sites, but actually if you have the balls to push and pull the hinge about 20/30 degrees, it gets the lubrication already on the hinges moving again, try it for a minute or two, I did and I was worried but all is well and it worked for me.

On the warping, hasnt happened to me.

On the cracked screen expect a bill of €1000, if it goes, its the most expensive part of the laptop to get fixed, get Applecare and its covered, within limits.
