Modem Problems

Well I built a PC - all seems to work no problem at all apart from the Modem which is just refusing to play ball .. details below .. anyone got any ideas ?

PC is this kit from Komplett - http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=301141&cks=PRL
Modem is a cheapy 56k PCI internal from Maplins (one of their white box ones) - bog standard equipment. It's the only card in any slot PCI or AGP on the board.

Everything worked just fine - seemed to recognise the modem - installed the drivers all looked good but it didn't work !
Initially there seems to be some sort of conflict .. when I queried the Modem in WinXP Device Manager the machine rebooted itself (not good)
I went into the BIOS and there was an option to select on if you had a Plug and Play OS .. selected this on .. it "refound" the modem - reinstalled the drivers .. works grand now in Device manager ... troubleshooting shows it recognises the modem and can query it - so all i assume is well.

However when trying to use it it just keeps giving No-Dial tone errors (phone line works just fine in the old PC with Modem beside it). I've disabled "Wait for Dial Tone" in the settings as that was suggested .. didn't seem to make a difference.

When trying to dial you can hear the modem "clicking" but you don't hear any dialling that u can usually here from the modem speaker ... just nothing

A bit of googling suggests disabling the LAN adaptor as a possibilty as it might be conflicting (onboard LAN on the mainboard).. and retrying with "Wait for Dial Tone" kept off.

What seems strange to me is that you can't hear it dialling .. just one pronouced click as it kicks in - dont' modems usually have little hardware speakers / play through the system speakers so you can hear the tone dialling ?

    Any other suggestions ?

The modem appears to be working in that it's accepting instructions and is returning results. Have you confirmed this by going into Modem Diagnostics in the Phone and Modems control panel applet?

Have you got the phone line plugged into the correct socket - ie the Line socket and not the Phone socket?

Last idea : it's possible that the socket is dodgy.

No dial tone sounds like a cable issue to me.
    What cable are you using.
The cable may need a crossover.

Hi Liamo - Yes it was plugged to Line (I had tried phone just in case too) ... I think I did the Modem Diagnostics thing yes ... that's where is says "Querying Modem" and then returns loads of settings strings etc. ? .. if so then yes that seemed to work

I'll play around with it a bit again .. if that fails I'll remove the modem (which I know works) from the old machine and install it in the new machine.
(I can remove the new modem or is it possible to just leave it in and have both modems - there are enough PCI slots - any issue with that?)

Wigertoods ... I've never heard of a crossover phone cable (ethernet yes but phone?) - I doubt it's cabling anyway .. the line works just fine in the modem in the old machine so I guess it's fine.

Yes, that's what I meant. It certainly seems to be installed correctly and working (as far as Windows is concerned).

No, there shouldn't be any issue with that.

I hadn't mentioned the cable 'cos you said that it worked fine in the other modem. However, as everything else seems to be working, it's worth a shot. Try changing the cable and see what happens. Did you get a cable with the modem?

    Regards,

    Liam
