Hi folks, just wonderin if anyone has taken advantage of our newfound ability to switch accounts. Im eyeing up that Permanent TSB one. Im with BOI and the amount of Fees and charges is amazing and iritating. Its no joke to say im shelling out a couple of hundred each year. The one thing I do like about BOI is the online/Internet banking. Do others to it?

    Cheers!

Thats a good question, DaBreno..... Is there a downside to moving to PTSB?

In the process of leaving BOI for them.....

currently with AIB, who messed up my account really bad last year, going to the point that my current account was rendered inaccessible for 1 whole month.
after I threatened to sue them, they surprisingly managed to fix the problem within a week.
Since then they are kissing my feet when I have a request to be processed.
I just don't call 24hour banking, go straight to my Branch manager as he offered this to me, hehe

Hey I was thinking of going with that TSB acc since BOI sent me a letter to inform me that my charge-free graduate account days are over... Are banks going to try and do anything to keep existing customers??

What is this bank switching ability of which you speak?:)

Oh right. I have accounts in BOI, AIB and PTSB. I only use the BOI one though.

I wouldn't go anywhere near PTSB as the "free banking" only lasts for 12 months on condition you are paid by direct credit. I find their fees to be dear enough around €30 per 3 months. Their staff are none to helpful either if you ever have to query an item.

As a side question are any other the other banks offering a similar switcher service?

From the link I provided five posts earlier:
The Irish Bankers Federation (IBF) today launched a new Code of Practice on Switching Accounts to make account switching as hassle-free as possible for consumers. Under this Code the country's leading retail financial institutions have committed themselves to new step-by-step procedures that will make it easier for personal customers to switch accounts from one financial institution to another.

    Answer=yes.

I found PTSB extremely unhelpful to be honest, unfortunately have mortgage with them BUT am tempted to go back. Had to close account with them approx 2 years ago because they changed policy on clearing salary cheques and now take 5 DAYS to clear them as opposed to BOI who do them same day.

Even when I told them that whas why I was closing the account they couldnt care less. However BOI are extortianate (sp!) with their bank charges - approx 50e per quarter for me.

    Its a tough call alright!

A bank will clear all it's own cheques since it has access to the account upon which the cheque is drawn. Therefore, a bank teller with a cheque in her hand will know immediately if there is sufficient credit within the payers account to cash the cheque.

It has nothing to do with PTSB, or BOI or other. If you have a PTSB account & if you get paid by a cheque which isn't a PTSB cheque, they are under no obligation to clear it for you. BOI wouldnt never clear cheques for me...infact, it's only in the past 2 years they've started clearing their own cheques in the same day.

TBH I would be worried switching as I would be afraid they would f**k up my salary payments and DD's. I won't do it until the procedure is tried and tested.

The Irish Permanent for approx 5 years that I banked with them (prior to moving bank) cashed ANY banks salary cheque then and there and had signs up to this effect all over every branch in. Approx 6 months after they merged with the TSB becoming the current PTSB they literally stopped this with approx 2 weeks notice and it also applied to PTSB cheques as well, considering I banked with them for nearly 6 years, had an account always in credit and a mortgage with them I feel that was infairly inflexible to take that into account!!

If the BOI can clear an Ulster bank wages chq on the same day and have banked with them for only 2 years now and no other business with them, I think its a bad reflection on the PTSB to be honest!!

Does it says it's only 12 month in the terms and conditions??

It's 12 months to start and then it is still free banking after that provided you keep an average balance of €1000 a month in your account.

I'm with EBS. I've never had to pay any fees.

Their bank card isn't the best as you can only use it in Banklink machines, but otherwise they are fine. My wages go straight into my account and I can pay all my bills online.

They have fairly good opening hours too, but I don't really need to go into them at all, unless it's to lodge a cheque.

PTSB have been cashing their own bank cheques since they came into existance in 2002. There was never a question that they wouldn't cash their own cheques unless the payers account had insufficient funds. Perhaps that's where they problem lay. It makes no difference if you have a mortgage/lifetime savings/current account that's constantly in credit - a bank can't cash a cheque that's gonna bounce.

Wow! That would stop me moving there. Would you have a link to this?
    Thanks.

Have been with AIB myself since my student days... got a laser and credit card from them too in the last few years and - like everyone else here it seems :) - I'm a big fan of internet banking and no complaints there either ... well, the only gripe is that you can't manually add accounts to your payment options since they upgraded a few months back (security reasons they tell me).

Rarely have to go into them - good thing too as my "home" branch is in Artane still and I'm in Blanch but they've been able to forward documents back and forth between branches before (quick side question: they told me they can't "move" a/c's between branches..I'd have to close my existing one and open a new one - are all the banks like this?) but overall I've been pleased enough with them

They've even been nice enough to preapprove me for a loan if I want it... :)

TSB are slower with transactions i have found. AIB charge an arm and a leg to use their machines.

am with ulster bank and Im not moving anywhere

I have free banking with NIB for years and years once you keep your account in credit by €1. If you overdraw you have to pay charges for I think 3 months you earn interest on your account also. Internet banking too.

I'm very happy with my bank. They sent me an email the other day to tell me that there was a problem with my account. All I had to do was log on their web page by clicking on the link they included in the email and enter my account details and PIN numbers to fix the problem. Very helpful people. :)

Wow. Me too. :) I could have sworn I had more money before the problem though.

PTSB : I am moving from Ulster Bank To PTSB and am going to open a "Switch Current Account" I have checked in the branch and read the T&C and dont see anying about a 12 month offer. As far as I can see this is a free account as long as your salary is transferred into it.

I have had a TSB account for several years, there are no fees as long as average balance is above €380 (it was £300 when I opened the account)
