Scanning photos

If I have old photos on 35mm film and prints, what is the most practical way of scanning them as computer documents.

Is there a way to avoid the RGB split that is typical when you scan the print?

I'm not interested in having all the negatives scanned, more selected prints. And I don't want to have to pay. :D
