No, Avast Or AVG is not to bad, but a firewall is a must, there is no "Maybe download a Firewall" about it go get one now, its very very important that you do.

    Free Firewall
    1) Zonealarm
    2) kerio
    3) Sygate

i doubt your running Adaware or sypbot either.

Panda Antivirus - excellent and came out top in an independent test on many antiviruses recently.

Ad Aware SE; most popular download from download.com
    &
    SpyBot S & D (Search & Destroy) I think 3rd most popular

Both are free & free to update! The first scan will frighten you as to what's lurking on your PC that you had no idea was there!

http://www.download.com & go to the most popular category

do any of these cause any problems when playing games online?

Ive used Sygate, even when its closed it will still block you connecting to game servers, but all you have to do is-
leave sygate active and launch your game, when the game doesnt find any servers exit out of the game and back to the desktop and sygate will be displaying that your game is trying to acess the internet, just enable it and problem solved :D
