    :(

trying to backup some of my dvd collection to bring on co-op with me. Only problem is my feckin lappy keeps turning off during the burn process.

I'm running a dual boot [fedora core 2] & XP Pro [sp2] on a p4 2.6 512ram, 40gig hd. I have just 10 gigs of free space and around 2 odd after decrypting the dvd with dvddecryter.

I let nero6 do the rest and it's during this that it powers off. I sat here and watched it **** up 3 dvd-r's on me :(

when i reboot there's no error message or anything to say windows had a problem.

    any ideas?

If you are burning to a single layer using dvd-shrink it will need up to 8.7GB for the image. Then it outputs compressed files to the HD and then loads them onto the dvd, so you need another bit of space for that (I think about 4.4GB or so), Probably needs some more for caches or something too.

If you are doing dual layers all I can offer is to close all your programs and unnecessary tasks and then run a simulation rather than waste another disc, if this passes and then fails on the real burn it may be dodgy media.

it's a single layer 4.7gig -r dvd. The storage isn't a problem cos i dont let it create the directory on the hd.

even when i do it still powers off. :(

so far managed only 1 backup all today :(

    would the lappie be overheating?

i'd be at a loss to explain why it would be overheating. [I did notice it may have been a tad warmer than normal but it generally it when i burn a dvd, even a data dvd]

first few times it rebooted, the charging light was flashing even tho the battery was at 100%.

perhaps till karma telling me to finally get a burner for my pc.

there's no warning of anything about to happen and if it was overheating surely playing games on it would cause the same to happen [hasn't been the case]

What happens when you burn from Fedora - anything useful in the log files?

This kept happening to me also and it turned out to be a power issue. Try doing it with the power lead plugged in.

hmm..seems to be a heat issue cos i got up this morning and first time of asking burnt the files from hd to dvd.
    Didn't try burning from FC2.
