Mic -> Mic preamp (usually mixing desk) -> Poweramp -> Speaker

The whole system is called a PA.

Sometimes the poweramp is part of the mixing desk (powered mixer), and sometimes it's part of the speaker (powered speaker).

Is this in a studio or at home. At home we just hook the mic directly to the amp. Work great but thats just in our shed

This is the basic model for any Mic amp system, in studio, home, or in a venue (though venue PAs get more complicated). If you skip the preamp stage, it can't possibly sound good (and may damage the equipment). You'd get better results plugging your mic into your toaster. If it's a guitar amp or a PA "head" it will have preamps built into it.
