Hi is anyone applying to the cadetships this year? Final applications have to be in by Friday and im doing mine today for the Air Corps.

Im 23 and finishing a degree in IT with Multimedia this May so im hoping i will get accepted into the Air Corps and save myself the bother of having to go out trying to break into the IT industry in a few months.

What i am wanting to know is if anyone has gone for this type of thing before, what exactly do they look for in a candidate sort of person do you have to be and any additional information would be appreciated

    Thank you!

    1:
why would then not take you with an attitude like that.
"i'm too lazy and lack ambition so i decided to join the air force, where do i sign up"
    2:
don't the forces have minimum contract i think 5 years?
at least if get a civilian job you can leave and then join
    3:
if by some chance you like the job and are good at it, you would probably
have more chance of advancement if you joined the army/navy as they
are bigger and you would get more experience, contacts.

    Best of luck in applying

I applied 4 years ago. Did very well in the apttiude tests and had a PPL licence so was confident of succeding but failed the eyesight test. If you have perfect eyesight I hope you appreciate it as it crushed me when my dream career was shut off forever because of that.

I also studied IT and it is hard to break into the industry.

To be honest, from your post Im not sure the Air Corps would take you. You seem to be very laidback about it. Im sure this would show through in the interviews you have to do.

If you want to apply, good luck but at least take it seriously.

I know a guy who wanted so badly to get into the Air Corps and as he walked into the room for his interview, the first thing asked of him was his height
and he told them, they replied you're an inch too tall, sorry..

That was it and he was crushed..

    Tough place to get into..

Silly him - the height regulations are on the form.

The Air Corp is very very hard to get into - 7000 people apply and they accept 7 or so - its easier to win You're a Star - after the aptitude test which is quite easy there is a psychology test and a further aptitude test and a basic aircraft flying knowledge test which is very very hard.

Where can you find out more about this stuff lads?
How much do they pay in general to cadets? Im a fully qualified engineer so would i get paid more than others?
This was something that always interested me. Do they only "hire" once a year?

www.military.ie - I think this is the army's site - should have all the info - pay is very low.

If you are a graduate you start on about €36k when you finish your training and if you are a pilot you get extra money as flying allowance.

Pay is low while training (between 16k and 25k depending on a number of things) but you don't really have many expenses - they feed you and you live in a barracks for 15 months.

i cant believe you need to do a psychology test and aptitude tests to win 'You're a Star', let alone know how to fly!

Huh ?? Who said anything about having to do it to win 'You're a Star' - just said it was easier to win it than get into the Air Corp - of course if you are a nutter they are not going to let you near a plane

    Hey thanks for replying everyone!

Im about 6 foot 1 or 2, does that mean im going to be too tall to become a pilot? My eye sight is near perfect so i dont think that will cause a problem and im not laid back about this choice of career, but the main reason im doing it is not to become a military pilot all my life but rather to get the Irish Defense Forces to pay for my training, get the experience and then hopefully buy my way out and start flying commerical.

Anyone ever tried anything like that and does anybody know in particular what sort of qualities they look for in the first stages of interview and also i sent off my form yesterday, how soon can i expect a reply?

    Sound!

Nice one, im going to wear a really baggy tracksuit that day and bend my knees slightly when they measure me. Sorted ;)

A lot of people who start flying for the military have the same idea as you. There's nothing wrong with it and its a great way to get started.
Just make sure you dont mention this in your interview as they wont look too kindly on it.
Best of luck, let us know how you get on

I will be coming up from the country for the day and have only ever been in Dublin Airport a few times and the actualy city once so i have no idea on how to get out there. I will be arriving in Houston station by train so if anybody could give me directions id be much oblidged :)

Unfortunately I'm not great help in terms of directions but would you have any difficulty with running 1.5 miles in under 11 minutes?

Best way to get to Baldonnel would be by taxi. it is on the Naas Road. Taxi would be about €35. Buses go out that way too but don't know what route numbers.

    Edit: http://www.dublinbus.ie/your_journey/returned.asp?submitted=yes&search_type=text&mnuTownPlace=Baldonnel

Aston Key is beside O'Connell bridge where USIT is. The #90 from Heuston goes there i think.

yep I know lots of people in the Aer Corp that got in with the old "bended knee in tracksuit" trick... They were fcuked when they tried to sit into the cockpit ot a PC9 though.
