How do these work, is it as simple as getting one of those programs, sticking the dvd into the dvd drive and pressing copy??

yep - DVDShrink is the dogs! If you've a single-layer burner, then you can only burn 4.7GB disks. Most movies are bigger than this. So, DVDShrink let's you strip out stuff you don't want on the finished article - different languages, subtitles, bonus material etc. The more you take out, the better the finished DVD. If you've a dual-layer burner, then you're gonna get more on the disk, better quality etc.

You select what you want from the original and the program creates the audio_ts & video_ts folders on your HDD. Then, using Nero to burn a DVD, just drop these two folders on the disk and away you go. Fairly straight forward.

Some DVD players have difficulty with the copied disks, but any of the reasonably newer players (~ 2 years old) should be fine.

    Thanks Swampthing.

Is Nero free, or would whatever software that came with the PC (eg the logo on the desktop that says "Burn CD's and DVD's now") do?

Sorry about all the "dumb" questions

I doubt what you have will do the business.

    Nero's not free......

Nero's not free but often bundled with CD writer packages.

Usually if you buy a DVD burner then you get software to burn the type of images that programs like dvdshrink will produce.

Have you tried just riping it with 2-channel sound?

You could also try creating an image without removing any of the audio tracks (I presume that you're removing some of them) and see if it works then.

Surprised no-one's mentioned it yet but for anything to do with ripping/copying dvds check out Doom9.net , there's all kinds of different programs for different tasks and different tastes, it's worth having a good read through this site to decide which suits your needs best.

cheers, hopefully will get something sorted from that site

also check out afterdawn.com , along the same lines as doom9.

i use dvd decrypter to rip, and Nero Recode to code and burn.

you can choose what extras you want to leave on, and it codes it to fit the disk and burns it, very simple.

Would you care to do a quick step-by-step guide for the simple among us who can't do divx-to-dvd?

is nero recode a part of the usual nero bundled software or is it a seperate piece of software?

in dvd decrypter click edit main movie files and ifo`s only. this will take out all the extra`s and in general you`ll be left with files around 4 to 5.5 gigs. use dvd shrink or whatever you like to burn.

I tend to use Clone DVD. Works for me, whereas DVDShrink let me down a few times with error reports. :(

If you're looking to encode stuff to AVI to play on one of the ARCHOS video jukeboxes, where size is a factor, google AutoGK (AutoGordianKnot).
it's easy to use and the end results are great

Sorry to go a bit off topic here but im using dvd shrink to back up my dvd's, my problem is when burning is finished the dvd rom automatically ejects, can i disable it ejecting by its self?

it's part of the Nero Vision Express 2 bundle, an add-on to Nero.
although i suppose you can get it as a standalone package.

it contains Nero Recode, Showtime and Cover Designer (which comes with the standard nero anyway)

Yeah it's a setting in properties in DVDShrink, think when you click on the "Back-up" button and you are given a window with a series of options and tabs, if memory serves me correctly there's a check box in the last tab.

    Back to the original poster.
DVDShrink is (imho) the easiest software for backing-up, can be as simple as click open, click ok, click back-up, click ok.
    How tough is that?
Personally I use DVDDecrypter with DVDShrink, first to rip the DVD as an ISO onto the HDD, then I use DVDDecrypter to burn it, I find it gives better results than nero.
But it is a bit more awkward to use than DVDShrink alone.

If you've any questions feel free to pm me.
