The Cellbridge based PC-Memory-Upgrade/Shop4Memory don't charge for delivery to Ireland or the UK... They're always pretty fast too - usually two days for Ireland.

The only problem being the (very likely) risk of being caught for customs - add about €15 plus 21%. Works out at roughly €175... Still a bargain though.

What are they like for durability though?

I've no idea - but I've been kinda drawn to one since I saw them 2 months ago. I posted mostly for some feedback on why they'd be a good/bad idea

I'd imagine they are less sturdy than flash drive because they've moving parts

    uberwolf.
Thats not a usb pen drive. Its a portable HDD.The picture compares its size to a pen drive.
I think the max pen sized memory I've come across is 2Gb and they certainly dont have rotational drives!!!

Still for $170 they are great value and are still portable.Although you'd have to be lot more careful than with a pen drive.

I'm concious that it's not a flash drive. But the size, capacity and price tick the right boxes!!!

Looks like there shouldn't be any duty or customs charge . They ship from Athens if ordering from EU. Sweeeeet :D

I recommend this on shop4memory.com €156 , 20GB externa hard disk, smaller than a €5 note, powered from USB port. Ordered one myself before Christmas, great little drive.

they have a 1gig for less than 80 euro. plus about 5 for postage. not too bad. My dad got it. Its tiny (twinmos) same size as all the other usb keys

had a quick look at that Me2 product from unibrain .. from a description on another site : http://www.1394store.com/eshop/product.asp?dept_id=34&pf_id=3530, you get :-
    The package includes:
    • One ME2 20 GB HDD
    • One 0.5 m (1.5 ft) USB 2.0 cable

Do you have to carry a 1.5ft cable around with you ??, no interest if you can't leave it on your keyring and connect it directly to a USB port. Seems the Transcend Portable Hard Drive 1.8" is the same.. any of these made with direct connectors?

Any portable hard drives I've seen all come with cables - they're generally too bulky/heavy to connect directly to a USB port. Plus it's not *that* much hassle to carry around a USB cable... remember the actual drive itself is about as big as an average sized mobile.

I doubt a usb connector could hold up a 20 drive hanging off the back/front of a PC, expecially if it took a sligh knock.

Your probably right lads but for convenience I would prefer no cables and a small form factor ..

For anyone interested in the non-flash drive solution, you could make a small USB 2.0 40GB external drive by buying this

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=122897&cks=PRL

    and this

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=122590&cks=ACC

    combined less than €100 + shipping : ;)

I assume it would get enough power from one USB port

If not they generally have a second cable you can use to draw more power.

Yep, I got a similar enclosure and stuck my old laptop drive into it when I upgraded to a new one. USB power works fine for me.

get the 200gig 7200 drive from komplett, with the IDE to usb2 box-thingey. It works out at about E135 when I last checked (2 weeks ago). Very cheap for 200gig portable.

If anyone is looking for something a little smaller than 1gb, Amazon are doing some great deals:

    128mb GBP 10.99 (€ 16.00)
    256mb GBP 19.00 (€ 27.65)
    512mb GBP 31.99 (€ 46.55)

Prices exclude vat @ 21% and delivery.

I bought one of the 256mb one a few months back and it cost me double that.

    Here's a link

I bought one of these - about 2mm thick so small they fit invisibally in my wallet (you dont need supplied adapter or cable to use them).
    Heres a link for 1M

    between $80 and $90 for 1G.
Maplin sell them also - at comical prices of course.

They are really good - wouldnt use any other type anymore. They come with a credit card sized holder that can hold two you can use if nervous of loosing it.

generally no, if its a 3.5" ide drive... the enclosures for them require external power(all in all they are quite bulky too, bout the size of a book...and usually very noisy fan's in em)...still for a portable solution of a decent size they are the best option (adv. of enclosure is u can swap in and out the hd's u want aswell...handy if u end up with a pc that can't boot and u wanna access whats on it from ur laptop or something)

usually the ones that can power off usb ports are 2.5" drives for laptops or smaller, as for those microdrives, they are used in most new portable media players so they have to be robust enough for that...should survive whatever you could possibly wanna do with a portable hd..
