no and neither should you, its just an excuse to spend spend spend with no relation whatsoever to love.

Grrrr Valentines Day. Its a day great for people who are in a relationship but a very lonely day people like me who aren't. Last year I said to myself ''Ok I will have a great Valentines next year by hopefully having a girlfriend'' but a year on there is still no love in my life. Ah well like the other person said do something that will take your mind of things by maybe doing something with friends or anything in general that will take your mind off things on that day if it gets you down.

Just remind yourself what happens the following morning, when thousands of voices cry out in unison: "Who the f*ck is that? Damn it, how much did I drink last night?"

I've been going out with my bf for over 5 years, making this the 6th Valentines Day to pass. Have we ever done anything? NO!! If he actually did anything for the day, I'd question his sanity and gullibility.

It's a waste of time and money. Do you feel so empty in your relationship that you have to celebrate it by buying a tacky card and overpriced flowers?

I honestly just don't get the whole farce that is Valentines?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭ionapaul

I always would buy flowers and go out for a nice meal on Valentines if I am attached at that time of the year. It may be a farce and commercialised but at the same time so is Christmas, New Years Eve, St. Paddys and all the other arbitrary holidays we celebrate! Its just an excuse for a bit of fun, IMO.

just a suggestion... how about a "Boards Beer" kind of thing but for singles on Valentine's Day... :D after all most couples will be too busy... and we the singles will have own thing... :p

It is just a day - if you are in love you should show your love every day and not just have one day when you buy overpriced flowers/dinners/cards. For those not in love - yes, it can be painful but just remember that it is a commercialised occasion. Every year my dad gets me a rose for the day so we have a daughter-father day (though he used to always get mum 12 red roses :)), on occasions my whole family used to go out for the night making it a family event...maybe being with the people that you love might be a good idea on the day but it does not have to be a partner.

Not at all. I actually had completely forgotten about valentine's day until you brought it up. I have never had a girlfriend plus I've never sent or received a valentine's card so it means nothing to me.

Don't worry, just find someone to stalk before the day and send them a card.

If you really need someone for the night, post your personal details in the Recycle Bin, that way the stalking can be shared around.

its just another day. I think it's a bit of a piss-take, just think LOVE DAY in the simpsons! In fairness though, any other day of the year if someone went out and spent an extortionate amount of money on a ****ing teddy you'd laugh in their face so why should feb 14th be any different??? I'll be working valentines day not that I was planning anything anyway so yeah I'm just gonna be treating it like any other day!

You say that, but it sounds to me like you're only saying it because you have no chance of getting anything.

I bet you'd love some chocolates and flowers. Your boyfriend just cant be arsed getting anything for you.

    Sucks.

    V. DAY = Great day to send a rose (couldn't send more, as I was kinda broke, and she lived in the country, so t'was a bit expensive sending it)to that someone you've a crush on... and then get struck down 2 days later.

    =-=

    So I'll do 3 things on V. Day;

Thank gawd (one of 'em) that it wasn't on a Saturday.
    Watch Stargate.
    Work.

    =-=

To all the merry couple's; hope ye have a merry day snugglin with your other half.

To the rest of ye; I still say its BS that theres more women in the world than men!

Well, clearly. Much better to trust a stereotype marketed by Hallmark (who definitely don't stand to benefit by then selling us obscenely overpriced cards. Oh no.) than to actually believe someone might be speaking honestly.

Neither I nor my girlfriend of 18 months have any interest in Valentines day. Didn't do anything last year, won't be this year. (Personally, I would be willing to make an effort if I thought she wanted me to, but various conversations on the subject have proven that we both think it's a total sham best ignored). I mean, put it this way:

You want to buy chocolates and flowers? It'll seem more sincere if :

    1) you do it at a time of year when there aren't thousands of euros spent on advertising to get you to buy them, and

    2) you've taken the time to figure out whether your SO will actually appreciate them. Contrary to those same stereotypes I mentioned before, not every girl's ideal present is a handful of dead shrubbery and a box of overpriced processed cocoa beans.

You want to take him/her out to dinner? Guess what - when it's not Valentines day it's generally easier to get a table at any restaurant worth going to.

You want to get him/her presents/sexy underwear/a lapdance/whatever the hell you're into? Why not get it anyway instead of waiting for some ridiculously contrived "holiday"? It's not like you're only allowed to give gifts on birthdays and official holidays, you know.

Personally, the only worth I've ever seen to valentine's day is in sending joke ones - it seems fittingly tacky and childish, somehow. If you genuinely think that a corporate-sponsored "romantic gesture" actaully means anything, then all I'll say is good luck finding someone as shallow as yourself.

valentines day is a nice idea n'all but i find it all a bit fake. the majority of people(not everyone now) buy their partner something just do they don't get given out to when they get home. if i were to get a bunch of flowers i would appreciate it much more on any day but valentines.which is why i have cancelled it this yr even tho its my first yr in a relationship on valentines.so boo to valentines i say.

    very original valentines cards...

Which is more romantic: a dozen roses on Valentines day or a single one on an idle tuesday afternoon?

If you answer that wrongly, then sure be depressed: your life is dictated by marketing and your nothing but a sheep. Otherwise, you've nothing to be depressed about.

Cajun, stop trying to teach the sheep. Too many peer groups confuse them.

    me laugh.

Last year I broke up with my girl friend of over four years at this time (reading this thread reminded me).

    Am I depressed?

    Am I f*ck.

The only scary thing is that I could still be going out with her. The 'search' for 'love' is more fun than the bloody end.

And next Saturday night we'll all have our choice of desperate drunk boys and girls who need to feel 'close' to someone.

    Heh.

Don't worry about it. It's a load of over-rated hype. If you really can't just let it go, spend the day loving yourself. :)

Couldn't have said it better myself. It's a Hallmark holiday. And I didn't need to quote big chunks of posts, but as Sleepy implied, an idle rose on a random Tuesday should be worth far more than a dozen on a day when marketroids say you should be buying them. There are quite enough people who can't stand each other buying things for next week because they reckon they have to. It's not worth a great deal to me - I'm more concerned with the other 364 days in the year - doing something when it's expected isn't all that much of a gesture and isn't worth that much as a gesture - certainly nothing compared to something spontaneous and given for free (ie, not with the expectation of getting /anything/ in return).

Having said that, if it actually means something to you (even if I reckon you're a victim of advertising hype), that's grand, as long as you make some sort of effort on some of the other days in the year. I love my significant other every day of the year (even the day Hallmark have told me I should). Frankly, **** Hallmark, they've probably caused more agony and disappointment on the designated day than they care to mention in their cards along with the "I wub you because u rhyme" stuff.

I average about 1 girlfriend a year...usually lasting roughly 4 months or so (it's not me...it's them!! :p) but it's never on Valentines day, Christmas/new years or my birthday...Not nice times to be alone :( but sure it'll be all good once you find "the one" (and no, im not talking about the matrix)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭iguana

My partner and I like to celebrate valentines day in a way that we don't feel exploited. We have a rule that we can get each other presents, but nothing traditional, (or unoriginal) so we buy something like a book or a comic, get some nice food and go home, cook dinner together and eat it at the table with the tv OFF.
As pointed out before days like xmas don't mean much either but most of us celebrate it. So why not valentines day, It doesn't mean we ignore each other the rest of the year.
That said, the best valentines day I ever had was when I was single and I took part in a successful blockade at Selafield.

It's subconcious. You don't want to have to buy them presents ;)
