I got Fedora Core 3 installed nicely on my laptop despite some early problems with it nuking my partition table. I seem to be having a problem with the sound card that causes Kde and Gnome to freez up. I assume this is the case as it is the only hardware not functioning correctly. ( i could be totally wrong)

I am resonably knowlagable of linux but installation difficultes and driver problems are not something I have had much need to understand in the past.

Something from /var/log/dmesg which caught my eye
codec_write 0: semaphore is not ready for register 0x2a

Can anyone point me to a site that has information about troubleshooting drivers and kernal modules (or even a good overview on drivers in linux). Or where I shuld be looking to find the problem?

what the F***K I always had sound from the from all previous version

Important Note for fedora core 3 users after install is to update udev rpm
    http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/udev/

after I did this I had sound working again

Ok I solved the Sound problem.

The wrong sound card was detected initially. Changing the relevent entries in /etc/modprobe.conf did the trick.

I think he driver that was causing the freezes in Gnome and KDE was the Intel Pro wireless driver(Centrino) . Going to reinstall that tomorrow and see if the problm returns.
