Anyone know anything about these, good or bad?

They did a door to door call in our estate a few weeks collecting water samples for testing. They were doing us a favour!!!!

Anyway got a call one night this week from them wanting to know if I'd be interested in having a demo in our house.

Am in the market for a water softener at the moment anyway. The heating unit of our shower is getting replaced every 9 months. No where near as expensive as a softener of course but over time it could work out ok. Plus I'm getting tired of getting caught out when the shower does block up.

This crowd do a filtration system apparently. Its supposed to both soften and remove all impurities from the water. The water is then safe for drinking, even for babies they claim.

I'm not saying I doubt what they said. I am however dubious of anyone trying to sell me something, plus there was a contradiction or two in what the demonstrator said.

Its much more expensive than a softener alone. The softener I was quoted 600 Euro for by a local crowd all in. CWS want 13.82 per week for 5 years. This they claim works out at 2800 Euro. Not on my calculator it doesn't, its more like 3593.20 Euro.

    Anyway, thoughts anyone?

I've just been offered a system for €3k for the mains water filter / softener including a separate drinking water filter & tap.

Does this sound like the same system ?

Did you buy it and does it work ?

    Hi,

A few questions come to mind,

Have they supplied you with test results from a certified laboratory ?

Have they offered the system as a one off fix or is there maintenance involved ?

Have they told you the cash price ?

Have they supplied you with a list of satisfied customers that you can call on ?

Have they told you how long they are in business ?

Are they listed in the telephone book with land lines or is all business done on cell phones ?

Cold calling for selling these products is fairly easy because most hard water areas are common knowledge and the consumer does like a safe water supply that doesn't ruin washing machines etc.

There are a lot of "Miracle Products" in this market including one that clips on to the mains water pipe, last I heard it no longer needed a power supply ?

    Caveat Emptor ;)

    Nope.
Is there regulation / certification of labs here ?

Well, you have to add salt once a month.

Yes, and the component's prices match up pretty well to similar stuff I found online. (I went googling after making the above post)

    He did actually.

Yes and yes. They certainly appear to be a fully legit business. My main concern was their profit margin. Any legit business will take a 1000% mark-up if they can get it.

Theres no problem paying good money for something like this - if it works.
My area has the same problem - showers being the main point of frustration. Becomes a pain having to clean them so often - and having to replace them so often.
Would also be interested to hear from those who have had a system installed that works.

This is a very clever sales tactic. They already know that they are in a hard-water area - or else they wouldnt have come to your door. It appears that they are providing you with something when in fact they are getting something for themselves ..ie. your telephone number and a solid reason for getting back to you - and an opportunity to close you out.

Yes I know the state laboratory provides the testing service (for a fee) I'm sure there must be others.

Well, you have to add salt once a month.

I do know there are salt based systems, they have been around a while now I also know some are better than others.

There should be no problem calling references given, in fact you could ask to call and see the system working.

They appear to be experienced in their business and not a hit and run outfit.

Obviously they are in business to make a profit, I would be very worried buying from any supplier who was not sustaining their business with sufficient profits to be there should I need them.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to get quotes from suppliers of other "Branded Systems" who have agents in Ireland to provide a fast efficient back up service.

Google is a very good rescource but everything is not applicable to Ireland.

I didn't go with the expensive system. I had a softener installed for 600 Euro and its in about 6 weeks now. Shower hasn't blocked at all in that period ( it usually did ).

    Very pleased with it.

    Hi sas,

I am cautious where these systems are concerned because one of my Sisters is on a well supply, her first system cost £2,000.00 and was a disaster, her second was €4,000.00 and the best money she ever spent (her words not mine).

My other Sister was recently quoted €1800.00 for a system to add to her mains supply, the minus was the filtered water would not be suitable for drinking, the upgrade at €2500.00 again salt based would be suitable for all household needs.

Would you mind posting the details about the system you bought for €600.00 ?

Whats the name of the system and which company did you go through?

Went with a local crowd called Aqua Techniques based in Derryguile MountMellick Co. Laois.

I'm on the mains in Portlaoise town. The water was hard enough that the heating canister ( I think thats what its called ) in our electric shower was blocking solid ( literally ) annually.

Living in a 2 storey house. Everything upstairs is on the softener and downstairs I put the washing machine, dishwasher and the utility room sink on the softener. Softened water is not suitable for use with babies (food and bottles ) apparently so I decided not to soften the tap in the kitchen.

Its a softener only, no chemical treatment.

The water is suitable for drinking I was told but apparently it does have a "flatter" taste than the unsoftened water. I've never actually tried a glass of the softened water from the tap because our utility sink is only in a fortnight. No idea what the unit itself is called, might be able to dig up the manual and let you know then.

Also, apparently the quality of the salt used in the softener makes a big difference. I'll post the brand I was told to use tomorrow also.

Forgot to add that a friend of mine is on a well in his new house. His water stank of wrotten eggs. I was terrible.

The same company supplied him with a system to sort this out. They've had no problems since.

I think that system was around 1000 punts.
