My dial up internet connection keeps disconnecting after only 3 or 4 mins on line. Any help to sort out this prob would be great.

try your dial up connection settings, sometimes there's an 'idle' setting that disconnects if there's no activity detected after a certain length of time. try disabling it or setting it for a longer period

Tryed all the settings in connection settings, also went through the settings several times with my isp Technical support and no joy.

check power management for the modem.
    make sure its turned off

if its a soft56k make sure nothin processor heavy is running in the background

check outlook express for hang up after sending and receving in the options.

    any loose connections.
any software that might be using an online service and disconnecting, antivirus etc.

    if nothing else
    try eircom
    189215150
    username - eircomnet
    paswword - eircomnet
or esats one, info should be on there site , if your alread using eircom

see if it holds that connection
if it holds that its your isp
if your pc with absolutely nothing running
start run > msconfig > selective startup > untick load startup group items , reboot
    still wont connect
bring it back, the modem could be faulty

    Try a virus scan.

If all of the above fail you're most likely looking at noise on the line or something like that, ring 1901 and choose option 2 to get a line test performed.

If it works fine with the other pc - forget about the line test.

I have a Trust dialup modem here that's a complete pain in the arse - stops sending and receiving completely every so often for between 1 and 2 minutes and then kicks back in. At around the 2 hour mark it stops again and doesn't kick back in, just disconnects after the minute or so. I had a look on the net about it and there is information there and fixes to be had...but rather than fixing it I resurrected my old pc for parts and used my old conexant (about 8 years old ) and it works a treat. I'm lazy you see ;)

It may be you've got a more extreme case of that same problem? If you're sure you've gone thru everything on the machine and are just fed up with it, replace the modem.

if your isp is eircom, then just remove the dial up settings an reinstall an isp, had to fix this problem before for someone.
what happened was they tried to install eircom as an isp from the free cd but didnt complete the registration process, after this their connection would disconnect itself every few mins for apparently no reason, so i just removed the connection and put on iol free instead.
