Mih, I had a dodgy ram stick that used to show up as a 64 instead of a 128 on some boots but not others.
But in this case I'd have a stab in the dark at the missing ram being shared out as video memory.

It could be that the video adapter is using the 64MB rather than having its own. I am not sure with laptops but with some PCs that have onboard graphics this is what happens.

    daramullally is correct.
You laptop has an onboard graphics card which is allocated a portion of the RAM, in your case 64MB, you can usually change the size of this in the BIOS, there's nothign wrong with you machine or RAM, you've just recieved a nasty lesson in why onboard graphic cards suck.
Out of interest what OS are you running?
Chances are that you really could do with another 256?
If so shop4memory.com are prolly your best bet.
    Good luck.

Sounds like the most plausible explanation.

Yes, it could well be the graphics card, I saw the same on my laptop.

You should be able to check in the BIOS, or you can right-click on the desktop, select properties->settings->advanced->adapter and look for video memory. That should account for the "missing" memory.

nice 1 lads yeah appears to be the Radeon onboard gfx :D

Hey you know, it's probably being used as video memory by the onboard gfx.

Radeon onboard graphics should have its own dedicated memory...?

aye my auld compaq had that shared memory bullshirt. You can probably change the amount your video card uses in the BIOS.

As an aside many notebooks have two memory slots as well as on board memory. In some cases putting ram in both slots disables the memory on the other board.

Anyone know if assigning extra memory over and above that needed for the resolution speeds up the video card in general windows apps as opposed to games.
