Efective Remote Control Over IP?

Ive got an old p2 that i use for webstuff, ftp server, etc...
At the moment ive got it on a kvm switch with my desktop but id like to move the desktop elsewhere & leave the p2 where it is, just the barebox.
Ideally what i want is to be able to access the p2 wirelessly with my laptop - theyre all on the lan.

I remember trying a few yrs back some remote control s/w and they were really bad (cant remember the names now), unresponsive, buggy, serious time lag, etc..

Is there remote control s/w that anyone could recommend that would work well for my purpose or a better alternative - wireless kvm or sucklike?

    thx.

    try tightvnc

remote desktop connection if you using windows...

i find the windows one to be faster over the internet, probably not very secure tho.

I want to do something very similar but I don't have a LAN. Could I use a serial/parallel/usb cable? Sorry if the question is a silly one but I know very little about networking.

I'm getting a new notebook next week so I'm looking forward to getting rid of the bulky old CRT off my desk. However I'd still like to use my old PC for various jobs and would like to use my notebook LCD to work on both the notebook and the old PC at the same time. I presume TightVNC would do?

get yourself a crossover cat5 ethernet cable and plug into the ethernet ports on both pcs
assign each pc an ip in the same range and youll be set

I don't think Tight/Real VNC work over serial/parallel cables, just over a network. Maybe you could get a crossover net cable between the PCs then it should probably work.
The only thing that I know works over serial/parallel cables is Norton PcAnywhere.

Thanks lads but unfortunately I don't have (nor plan to get) ethernet cards. I was sure there would be a way of doing this via serial/parallel/usb ??

Your new laptop will have an ethernet connection built-in and you can get a 10/100MB NIC for less than €15 in town. What's the problem?

if you wanted to do it over USB, you could get one of them €30 usb networking cable jobbies... but an ethernet card would be a hellofalot cheaper.

And faster, and supported by pretty much every operating system under the sun.

 it will?? Excellent! Duh! Yes, I'd totally forgotten that because it was of no interest to me when ordering - just an incidental extra. Now it means a whole lot more :D
