    k weird prob

i bought a couple of rounded IDE and Floppy cables to save space in my machine

after they were installed on boot i got a long continous beep and no picture on screen so i assumed that either the gfx card or RAM were loose but they were grand
after a couple of attempts the machine booted fine

and now if i turn the pc on from cold i either get the long beep or else the machine powers on and the HDD and Power leds light continuously but the monitor wont come on and the machine just does nothing but a quick push of the reset button boots it perfectly

should i be worried?? i thought t might have been a loose ATA connection to the hard drive or something but ALL drives incl optical and Floppy appear and function perfectly in windows upon boot so the new cables are grand

    im running a :

    P4 2.8
    Mobo : abit is7
    1GB PC3200 ram
    120GB S-ATA Seagate drive
    XFX GeForce 6800GT 256MB
    an MSI cd-rw
    an LG DVD drive
    standard sony 3.5" floppy

    etc etc
    any help wud be great

You should probably uninstall VB.Net 2003 The enterprise addition! That might help! Or you could just go out and s**g sheep in the fields of Ballygobackwards!!! Eh Johnny boy? :D

Do you still have the old cables? If you put them back in is everything hunky dory, jackanory, or is it just a constant horror story?

I had a same problem with an old machine. ended up as a work around was to set the hard disk pre delay in the bios to 10 seconds. never had any problems after that with startup on cold boots

Sounds like you need a new psu or else the gfx is dodgey.
Have you tried a different graphics card in it?.
If you have a old pci graphics card try it.Then it is the psu if it stays the same.
    Regards kieran

Looking at the specs that would seem to indicate a pretty recent system in which you wouldn't expect problems like slow disk spinup esp. with SATA disk. Very strange.

yep its a new enough machine i built over last summer.i took popeys advice and placed a 10 sec delay on IDE boots through the bios and it seems to be grand now.thanks for the advice everyone

Those beeps are your BIOS communicating with you. Do a google on bios beeps for your specific brand of bios, and it might narrow it down a bit.

When I stuck in my graphics card, mine let off 1 long beep and 6 (or 7) short ones. Looked up a pc magazine and saw that i should reseat the graphics card (well i knew to that already but.... :)
