Look, its a fact of life that GW will raise prices.
Add to that Ireland pays the highest prices in Europe, we can get rather annoyed.

So, DON'T BUY FROM THE GW BLOODY STORE!

Go to www.nugaming.co.uk for 10% off UK prices (though with postage it ends up as arround 1% off) but thats still better than paying 10% more isn't it?

Just tell him Giorgio reffered you

There are several wargames about that have nothing to do with GW (apart from some of the people behind them being ex GW staff fed up with the thing). No names spring readily to mind because I don't pay much attention to Wargames these days, but they're out there. Ask about in a games store that isn't Games Workshop, you'll be surprised at what else is out there that they keep the hell away from their own shops. Go on, give them a little competition, they could do with it. :)

And if you like the game but not the price, there are a few miniatures companies that make strangely familiar looking models for a fraction of GW's high prices. Admittedly, the quality isn't quite as good, and it'll be seen as an excuse to bar you from a GW tournament (so much for the love of the hobby), but if you're not interested in the above, what have you got to lose but a few bills?

I have made a couple of my own pieces for the fraction of the price.

heres a place to start, I cant find a local dist unfortunatly.

I tend to use green stuff for the mould with plaster to fill out the bulk of the model.

Plus I water down my white metal with solder to make it last longer.

Of course I havent done any large scale pieces, I suppose you could try it if you want.

Its really a matter of trial and error, but I believe this method should really supply satisfaction (fisically and emotionally) if you do it right, which I never have I might add.

Alternate sci fi wargames? Not a huge selection out there to be honest. About the only main competitor at the moment is Warzone, which has a system I quite like.

Void could still be around, but I don't know anyone that plays it.

Battletech is good, but not quite the same playstyle.

In development are a Starship Troopers game by Mongoose, and a Star Wars minis wargame, but .. someone in the US. I don't have dates for either of those two, but I'm sure a quick googling would turn up info on them.

Thats about all I can think of in the 40k scale.

There are (I believe) a few Epic scale games but I've not played any of them.

The way i cut my costs down was conversion, conversion, sales, games workshop openings notsure if they still do these, or get someone with an address in england who u know and trust.

why buy a shotgun model when u can covert a flamer.( not much but the save of five euro for bilster packs)
combi weapons bolterfalmer is very easy to make. If you get plastic plasmas and meltas same story applys.

Maybe we should stick up a thread on conversions.

    .

Starship Troopers is out in April and looks like it'll be pretty good. They also intend to sell the various bits fairly cheap.

There'll be a full boxset, with rules, bugs and mobile infantry. There'll be supplementary books to expand the armies. There'll be additional boxsets with the larger bugs for example. They current suggestion is €20 or less for a box of 6 warrior bugs. You can see examples here

    http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/home/detail.php?qsID=795&qsSeries=

They're saying $75 for the full boxset, but it remains to be seen how the exchange rate will affect that.

Wonder what the model size will be, or more important, how good of quality are the models? both in materials and detail. As far as model detail GW have some mighty fine looking models.

The bugs are a good three inches high or so, and another three across. The mobile infantry are the usual 28mm.
