Annoying Problem

My computer keeps starting itself up every morning at 7a.m, the only way to stop it is to turn off the PSU switch at the back.

Is there anyway to find out what piece of software or what part of windows might be causing this so I can stop it.

    Running Win 2K Pro SP4

    Cheers

I can't remember, does Windows 2000 have scheduled events? If so, it might be there...

check the BIOS many business machines can be set to wake up at a certain time , so they have booted by the time the bods arrive in.

It wont be anything to do with windows unless your maybe only putting it into sleep mode rather than actually switching it off.
It will be something in the BIOS, but machines turning themselves on could be set by either a timer in the bios, or if you have a phone line or ethernet connected then those can send signals to turn the machine on also.

It isnt the bios and its deffo not wake on LAN e.t.c

I'm pretty sure it was my Anti-Virus auto scanning (although I didnt think that an anti virus program could start a cold pc) ... i'll find out in the morning.

    Cheers Lads

Looks like it's the BIOS then, you could try resetting that..

It has to be the bios. Even when the pc is off the bios is still active because the motherboard battery powers it to keep your (bios)settings and to keep the RTC (real time clock) running so that the pc holds the time. The power management section in many pcs bios would have the ability to set the pc to turn on at a given time. Looking for the solution in windows or window programs like task scheduler or the antivirus is pointless as they are completely inactive when the pc is shutdown. Being windows dependent they can only run stuff if the pc is already on. In sleep mode the pc is also technically still on so apps can wake it up. This however is not the case if you have gone through the Start > Turn off computer > Shutdown as then only the bios timer or the power button can restart the pc.

It was the BIOS after all , it was a case of RTFM (Read the fúcking manual) found the setting and just disabled it (wake on alarm)Thanks Lads
