    Guys

A little help? Got a new Dell Inspiron 700 M in the States, XP pro, 512, 60gig. it is taking nearly 4 mins to boot up. Going through US Dell support - taking time. In the meantime are there any obvious checks or fixes that can be applied to this problem?

BTW - Should have mentioned I have removed a pile of programmes from running automatically at start-up - the usual speed up tircks a novice would try....

I'm assuming you are running XP.

Where is the primary delay happening? For example is it before you reach the Welcome screen (if it's enabled) or afer you have logged in?

It's worth opening the event viewer and checking for suspicious errors/warnings in the application and system logs. Could be a timeout problem with a service starting so watch out for events which could indicate that.

I would also recommend running a spyware removal tool such as Ad-Aware. Defragging the disk is also a basic fix, but I reckon there's a bigger problem here.

Re: Dell - I know on business machines you can ring your local Dell support number. Worth a try giving the Irish number a call.

yes running XP. The problem happens when it reaches the welcome screen, 30 secs, spends about 30 secs on that, then 2 mins or more of black screen (with pointer visable) with 30 secs to usable.

There are no obvious errors occuring etc. though I may not be looking in the right place..

I will look for spy / ad ware though have only been on line for a matter of mins so far and only to webmail server.

Will definately follow up with Dell anyway.

    Thanks

Watch out for excessive disk activity during these timeouts. There is always the possibility that your hard drive has developed a fault and it's struggling to read the files it requires at bootup.

BTW to open the event viewer, click on Start > Run > and type 'eventvwr' > ok.
