Health cover while in Canada longterm?

I'll try to keep this simple...

I want to spend up to 6 months in Canada as a visitor before applying for permanent residence there. But I recently got diagnosed with an iron storage condition that requires me to have 500ml of blood taken (and some blood tests to check iron levels and some other related levels) once every two weeks for up to two years. I have that treatment covered on my medical card here, and I know I can get it covered on the Canadian equivalent 3 months after getting resident status there.

My question is, does anyone have any experience of having to arrange for health cover for similar ongoing treatments while visiting other countries. Is there any way of getting my Irish medical card to cover me abroad for a few months?
