Buying a laptop in the US

I'll be heading out to the states in a couple of months. Is it worth the effort to buy a laptop over there. With the dollar week at the moment surely there's got to be good value for money? Although there does seem to be value from UK sites like www.ajp.co.uk etc...

Anyone done it? Where is good to buy over there. I know your supposed to declare it coming back through customs etc., anyone been nabbed for the duty (not that I would condone tax evasion!)?

I'll be in New York & Las Vegas, is the tax an issue? Do I get tax back etc.

    Thanks for any advice! :D

P.S. I'd be looking to buy a laptop good enough to play HL2, DOOM3 etc. So fairly well spec'd.

its still worth buying in the states, have a look at dell.com there prices wont be far off the shop prices. When your in NYC go to J and R Electronices near ground Zero they have 3 floors of electronics and good prices on electronics. Also you dont get tax back from the US as it is per state VAT,the US as a whole dont charge VAT and there is no way of claiming it back

Cheers, any idea if the tax is different between New York and California, is it better to buy in one or the other?

I've bought a laptop from the states, was well worth it, depreciation over a year was f-all, and i bought it cheap.
Depending on the type of laptop your after you can save quite a some in comparison to buying it from the UK.

i think the tax is 8.25% in NYC not really sure you better look around the net not sure about California either but there would only be 1% or 2% in the difference. It would work out the best if you could buy the laptop off the net b4 u go and get delivered to where your staying
