Am I alone in hoping that he pops his clogs and that a slightly less deluded person takes his place and sanctions the use of contraception?

You won't be alone, but I don't share your opinion. I hope he gets well, and if he doesn't I hope he goes peacefully.

One can hope. In reailty though, nothing will change. With the advent of the next Pope, the Catholic church itself will finally crumble and die.

It's probably just a case of this really bad cold that's going around. Everyone I know has had it, even Slobodan Milosevic has it ffs. :)

I don't really see why people are getting "upset", seriously people the man is old and probably wants to die by now.

 You don't see why people are upset when someone may die?!

Are you sure you got your head screwed on today?

People die, it's a fact of life, you can't be upset at each person that dies (that you don't know).

Personally, I can't say I'm in the least bit sad, but then again I'm not a fan of the Catholic church.

Well, do you know him personally? Has he ever even acknowledged your existance? People die every day...are we getting upset bout them?

    Amen!......I mean I do.

I wouldn't wish the man any harm as a fellow human, he's had a good innings as in length of life, but I consider him and the catholic church a very negative force in the world and him expiring can only be a positive thing. The less conservative Christians in the world the better IMO, 1 at a time please.

    Move along JP.

So you only care about those you know who die? Hmmmm, that's nice.
Did you care about the victims of the Tsunami Disaster?
    Or, those victims in Darfur?

You KNOW it wasnt meant like that, but does it not occur to you that some people have more important things to worry about rather than the fact that the pope could be dying?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

People die. The Pope is a person. Ergo, the Pope will die at some point.

I'd never wish for someone to die, and I'd empathise with the family of anyone who does die, particularly in tragic circumstances, but I'm not going to worry or get upset about anyone who dies that I don't know or care about. Humans die, all the time. I'm as humanist as the next, but I don't care about most of them.

    PH01,
If you can only have a discussion with people by twisting their words to fit what you want, then don't bother.

If you want to feel sad for every single person that dies, go right ahead, but you'll be crying every single second of the day. Death is a fact of life, each individual person dies, tragedies and natural disasters are a different story and you know it. He is a very old man and has, I'm sure, lived a long full life, that's not a tragedy to me.

It's sad when someone dies tragically before their time. But the pope's time is well overdue, the man is struggling through every day. I don't think it would be sad for him to find the peace of death.

I had a premonition of something like this very recently. Behold my power.

I'm pretty sure that most people replying to this thread has been upset about somebody they didn't know personally dying, wheter it was Kurt Cobain, Princess Diana, Christopher Reeve, or whomever.

I don't see why people are critising others for hoping the Pope doesn't die, or being upset if he did. It's actually quite sad to see. (both the Pope's ill health and the criticism, but in different ways).

Someone was right earlier on when he/she said that there was a difference between feeling bad because of the (possible) impending death of the Pope, and feeling bad because of the Tsunami last month. The Pope is known to us all, and a lot of us have known of him all our lifes, some are even part of the Church he heads. While those that died in the Tsunami (for most of us) are complete strangers, complete nobodies.

Which affected me more? the death of Kurt Cobain? or of those that died during the Tsunami? ... It was the death of Cobain.

The man's a rock* - I'm sure he'll pull through - and even though he's no John XXIII, at least he played a role in destroying cummunism in Russia....apparently...

    * Appologies for the religious pun...

Not bothered how people look at me after saying this, but no.

It was a natural disaster. People die all the time from 'acts of god'. You don't give your heart out to everyone who dies in these because

    1) People die everyday from acts of god (including dying of natural causes). If you stopped for a minutes silence for everyone you'd never speak again.

    2) How anyone feels doesn't change what happened. People won't come alive again because you 'feel bad' for them. If you died, do you think millions thinking it was a bad thing would change anything? Only if it were a man made catastrophy. Then it would make a difference and there would be a reason for it.

I agree that people can fight the powers there who wouldn't put in the early warning system, or kick them out of a position of power/responsibility, but as for the people themselves - it wasn't a nice thing, but i'm not going to pine over them.

But otherwise, sorry, I don't cry for them just as I don't cry for everyone flashed up on a screen from sky news.

Actually, it's a double negative. People said that they wouldn't care if he died. Then other people criticised *them* for not being upset. Group A then defended themselves.

Actually .... after re-reading the thread ... I can't say you're right .. they were a few posts along the lines of "hopefully all will be well" or "get well John Paul" then there were a couple of "it'd be better for the church if he died" type posts (not exact quotes by the way .. just the type of coments made) ...

which (while are a bit ignorant) are all well and good

    and then this one
    Rozabeez wrote:

which would be the first post to make a criticism about anything, and which criticises those for feeling upset about the possible death of il papa.

The thought that he wouldn't be around anymore is a litle saddening, maybe it's because he's been around for so long and is like part of the furniture.
either way he desrves a bit of respect.
    Peace JP.

    Hmmm.

    Which is sadder:

    1. A sick 84 year old man dying under the care of the best medical practitioners available, knowing (read: believing) he's on his way to the pearly gates? or

    2. Dragging a sick 84 yr old man around the world, dressing him up in robes to mumble and dribble in front of millions.

The Church may not go away but maybe a new "administration" will pull it's head out of it's holee smokes - I've gone off topic ;)

I personally don't think a hate-mongering homophobe deserves my respect, but to each his own.
