Ok i met and old friend of mine who now works for eircom just an hour ago.
Big coincidence when you ask a m8"what are you at now?" he replies im with eorcom broadband and only yesterday i have switched it on here in Monasterevin.
I mean holy crap ive been waiting 5 years for bb and then this.
ANyways ive just checked with both esat and eircoms online number checker to see if my number qualifies and what a pleasane experience after 1000s of attempts in the past to get a congratulations you can avail of broadband.
To cut a long story short my old friend also rang someone in eircom while we chatted and they also said i can avail ,he then said he would have a m8 of his to call to me this evening.
Now big decision time,i want broadband for gaming 99%.
What and who should i go with?
Money is not an issue as ive been crucified with paying for isdn rental,my isp and calls etc for so long now.
Id really appreciate some advice as i havent been really following the whole irish bb scene religiously as my area was always so far off being upgraded.

Im thinking of going with the eircom 512k connection with 8GB limit, this is for 54:99 yoyos per month.
    Good or bad choice?
Having read some threads here it seems eircom yield slightly better pings for gaming?

Eircom is your best bet there !!

Go with Esat. €55 for 8gb cap is a rip off.

Esat have 16gb cap for €50 and the pings are the same.

If i went with esat does it matter who downgrades my isdn?
I have isdn from eircom at the moment,i know eircon can take this out but can esat engineers take out eircoms isdn?

    From IOL FAQ:

What if I have ISDN or a home alarm system connected to my phone line?

You should still be able to avail of the service, however you will need an engineer to visit and install the equipment.

If you go with esatBT or anyone other than eircon you're going o be charged an extra 200 euro or so (199 I think) to have the ISDN "uninstalled" - you have to pay this - no self-uninstall option, despite the fact that it's really only exchange changes, and remove the plug/play (or plug&pay as I called it) isdn box.

However, if you take an eircon trial, they will uninstall your ISDN for 24 euro. Keep it for the two months trial period, then cancel it, and order from someone else. 199/200 is what eircom charge the other providers to uninstall it, yet they do it themselves for broadband changeovers for only 24 - go figure...
This leaves you with a gap in service at the end of the two months, but you're saving 175 odd on the uninstall charges

But you get the first 4 months free with Esat. (3 month trial and first month free when you sign up)

I just rang esat and they say i need an engineer to take out isdn and they will make appointment for that but it costs 190 euros for thi3.
The lady went on to say esat only do a self install option and that they send out modem and cable and its a simple process of connecting cable to phone socket then to modem and from modem to pc.
    Is this the case?
She also said there is a 21 working day wait.
Sorry if these seem noobish questions but not having experiencing broadband and its procedures im just being cautious.

Installing broadband was very easy. Just plug everything in, change a few settings on the modem and enter username and password. Wait about 10 seconds for it to connect and it was done. I was surfing the internet and downloading porn faster than ever. :D

Basically it comes down to who yields better pings and whoever offers less hassle during the isdn changeover.
    This seems to be eircom.
I know a few friends around the country who swear by eircoms pings ,should i yield the same pings as these guys?or does it come down to line quality etc?
Also i think im right to say i can dump my iol no-limits service provider as whoever i choose is the isp as in bb provider is isp all in one?

Also for gaming would i use much of the download cap or indeed any of it?

Thanks guys so far for your hepl,i want to order this today or tomorrow at latest,5 years waiting i think im entitled to be impatient.
One last thing ,again probably another silly question but does it make a difference if i order online or ring their order line?Whats the normal time period from order to installation?

Esats pings are perfect, can't fault them. Just pinged boards.ie:

    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=56
    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=56
    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=56
    Reply from 82.195.131.130: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=56

    Ping statistics for 82.195.131.130:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 25ms, Maximum = 28ms, Average = 25ms

You can chose whether you want to change you phone calls over to Esat. If you do the monthly subscription is cheaper.

If you only browse the internet and play games 8gb is more than enough for you.

Ok ive ordered the 8 gig limit with eircom.
3 weeks from today i should have it :)
Ill see how it goes,if not happy ill switch to esat after 2 month trial.
One question will the eircon engineer bring along the modem with him when he arrives to take out isdn or is it delivered?
Also is much involved to actually setting broadband up my end? as i understand the technician cant touch my pc.

    About setup ^^^

    Why you decide on Eircom?

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,701 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Ok i rang a m8 who is with esat and he says its very good for gaming so ive cancelled with eircom and opted for esats 16gig cap for 39:99 yoyos, the 16 gig is just to tempting to throw away.
If ingame pings are anywhere near eircoms ill be happy.
Ive just ordered but they dont give an exact date so i assume they need an eircom technician to take out isdn.
They said they will notify me within 5 days and should be no longer than 21 days wait for installation.

    Right or wrong choice guys?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

Your probably sick of hearing from me but you have made the right choice. I though I would get nowhere near 16gb a month but the last 2 months I've just been scraping through on 16gb.

And pings are great. Same as Eircoms :D

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,701 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Not at all sick of you m8,i appreciate your time and effort.
    Thanks to all.

Me wonders if i will be waiting longer to get it installed with esat than with eircom.

cool ill go with esat also if pings are good why not its cheaper and 4 months free

one thing esat have interleaving off on their packages so that will help the ping rates also

Dcully if i dont like the service from esat its still 3 months free then get eircom anyway
