Never mind the reason behind my looking, but is it just me or can I not find the lyrics to "Nearer My God To Thee" anywhere on the internet?

You all should have heard of the song anyway.

    http://www.fortunecity.com/campus/history/683/m_nearermygodtothe.htm

Heres the search that worked, last result on page 1.
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&q=%22Nearer+My+God+To+Me%22+words&btnG=Search

Edit and yeah, as posted above looks like its called '.. To Thee'

    "Nearer thy God to thee"?

Never heard of it. Perhaps it's the obscurity that's preventing you find the words :)

Obscurity indeed! It was once only surpassed by "Amazing Grace" and the 23rd Psalm in popularity at Christian funerals. It's said to be what the band on the Titanic played as they went down (though other witnesses disagreed).

Since the author was Unitarian, the title has frequently been stated as the common purpose of all religious practice (albeit framed in Christian terms).
    Nearer, my God, to Thee
    Sarah Flower Adams

    Nearer, my God, to Thee,
    Nearer to Thee!
E'en though it be a cross
    That raiseth me:
Still all my song shall be
    Nearer, my God! to Thee,
    Nearer to Thee.

    Though, like the wanderer,
    The sun gone down,
    Darkness be over me,
    My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be
    Nearer, my God, to Thee,
    Nearer to Thee.

    Then let the way appear
    Steps unto heaven;
    All that Thou sendest me
    In mercy given:
    Angels to beckon me
    Nearer, my God, to Thee,
    Nearer to Thee.

    Then with my waking thoughts
    Bright with Thy praise,
    Out of my stony griefs
    Bethel I'll raise;
So by my woes to be
    Nearer, my God, to Thee,
    Nearer to Thee.

    Or if on joyful wing,
    Cleaving the sky,
    Sun, moon, and stars forgot,
    Upward I fly:
Still all my song shall be,
    Nearer, my God, to Thee,
    Nearer to Thee.

Heh, I was being slightly tongue-in-cheek. More often than not, someone will name a classic film, song, or event, and I'll shrug my shoulders, and say "Never heard of it".

I'm not very good with names at all at all. I have in fact heard of said song, just never knew the name of it.

The song is also on the album "Heavenly" by The Vard Sisters if you are looking for it. the words are in the sleevenotes as well.

and it was the song being played when the ship was going under the water

also if you saw the modern version of the movie you will remember that it was a string quartet playing it on the deck. and there is a scene where a mother is reading the story of Tir na nOg to her children while it is being played in the background.

doesnt mean it was defitnally true. Titanic is full of myths...ranging from it not sinking to the captain (smith i think) swimming out with a baby in his arms handing it to a passanger and swimming back to the sinking ship. The movie is also not 100% factual, ignoring the added love story many elements of the ship were inacurate. Including same basic designs in the ship. such as the 4th funnel of the ship is not real but a dummy yet in the film there are many shots of all 4 funnels smoking which is impossible.

i didnt say it was true. i said that if you had seen the film that it was the song being played at that particular point in the film.

Some witnesses reported that this was what was played, but some disagreed.
Circumstantial evidence backing it up is the fact that it was what the band-leader had asked to be played at his funeral.

boards ate my other post. To help looking for that. Put the name of the thing you want in quotes.

    Eg.

    "Nearer My God To Thee"

Also if you know a particular word you can prefix a + symbol to ensure it is picked up.

    eg.

"Nearer My God To Thee" +wanderer

That above in google found this first time.

Thanks Hobbes, I konw how to use google though, it's just that, for some reason, I couldn't get anything on this. I think it was my lack on information on the subject, rather than my lack of knowledge of google.
