Sorry to say it, but you may as well forget about it. It takes MUCH too long to decode anything more than a 3 letter password. Trust me, i've been there. I encrypted some stuff before (work related at the time) and managed to forget the password and lose the sheet where i had it printed (it was a long one :P). I tried a cracker, but on an AMD2500+ it was trying about 300-500 passwords a second... much much to slow to be of any practical use.

Get the program John Connor used in Terminator 2. To my memory he was able to crack some bank Pin numbers in a matter of seconds, without being cought!

Also, if my memory serves me correct, he took out $300 and went to the mall, where the first attempt on his life by the T1000 took place. However this attempt failed as another Terminator, this time the older T-800 (Model 101) protected John Connor.

To recap, if you dont have the password, you probably shouldnt have the file. Check the website you got it from or the person who sent it to you to see if they have it. If you forgot it check your underware. Writing passwords on underware is safe as a geek's underware never comes off.

:-O 300-500 per second is a very poorly written encoder. A decent password encoder (written in assembly) should attempt upwards of 20,000 per second, making a brute force attack on a rar file conceivable, but boring.

Basically, if n is the number of characters that could have been used then it's n^length_of_password. You can see that for a 5 letter or less password where it's all lower case, that makes 11 million or so possible combinations. Throw in upper case characters and you're into ridiculous numbers.

I always preferred the more professional way of knocking your heels together and saying 'there's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home' you can even decrypt 128bit passwords with that hehe.

would recommend this thread to be closed, if he doesn't have the password, he if either not meant for this file, stupid for losing the password or an Atari Jaguar.

/edit Oh yeah, I just saw, even if it is a Mod and can ban me for this

    Eh...not really
Its happened to me before where the originating site's links have gone down when I go to find the password and then i cannot unlock the rar.

Well at least the replies cheered me up. First thing I did was check google for a password cracker. I got the best one but it's not doing shít.

As regards "you shouldn't have downloaded the file if the password isn't given". It's 2 DTS CD's. Perfectly legit cd's of course. They were posted on a newgroup and you get the password and details of the cd from http://www.dtsac3.com/ (forum).
So there I was last week reading about the 2 cd's thinking will I save the page so I have the password? No, that'd be too simple wouldn't it. I said I check back when the 2 cd's were downloaded. Now the download section of the forum is restricted and they ain't giving access to anyone.... If only I'd saved the page/password. 1.4GB of a download wasted.

Don't suppose anyone uses that forum and has access to the restricted section?

    Boy am I pissed.
