Graphics Card Problems

OK, need a little bit of advice,

I bought a geforce 6600 128 mb card recently and I was roking fine. I was running Doom 3 on it and there was no problems at all as regards slowdown or any glitches etc....

Anyway I installed Rome Total War and was running that for about an hour when I started to notice glitches. Thinking it was the game I reinstalled it and ran it again. Worse this time, colours where beginning to flicker and change, massive graphical problem basically. I then tried Doom 3 and the colours where all wrong and gradualy the whole game became unplayable. I reinstalled the gpu drivers and the same result. I also reinstalled windows for the hell of it and no change.

I also noticed glitches in wondows, with line visible across the screen and colour problems. However football manager worked fine with no problems at all.

So my question: Is my card f*cked or do I have a diff problem. Could it be the pci interface with my motherboard.

    Dan

Could be overheating and they are Artefacts.

Can you check the temp of the GPU?

There lots of programs but the Nvidia drivers (latest ones ) should have an option to see the temp.

Its not overheating, keeping a cool 52 degrees.

if the card stays at 52 degrees then it isn't a problem with the card unless you were tampering with unlocking the pixel pipelines with a program such as rivatuner, you should try the latest beta's from nVidia, they can be found by clicking the "Beta Drivers" link above the card type selcetion on the driver download page, these beta's also give you the option of having the card automatic overclock, this means the forceware drivers controll the overclocking of the card with reference to the gpu core tempture.

Alot of programs have massive texture problems with the Geforce 6 series Cards, i myself have to buy a new motherboard to get the Geforce 6800 i got for Xmas '04 to work.

Games such as Farcry, Hitman contracts and Tomb Raider angel of darkness needed patches for such problems to be fixed. if you have patience there should be a fix patch for your game soon enough.

and with regards to doom 3, that game kicks ass with a 60+ frame rate on the 6800 128mb, with 1gb of DDR400 system ram

The thing is, doom 3 was kicking ass on my system with 60+ framerate and all of a sudden it wont work now. The worrying thing is I'm experiencing problems in windows, the background has pixilated lines across it and some of the drop down menu's have glitches in them. I'm beginning to think its a hardware problem. Can't think what happened to it though.

I had similar problems with farcry and my 6600gt. It was an issue with the XFX card I had and I basically just needed to install an older driver, 67.93 or something like that. I posted it before.......

I haven't overclocked it. Should it be giving problems in windows with the background? It can't be overheating while running windows. I might try an install an earlier driver. I have got another cad right up against it so I'll move that and see if it helps but it was running grand for over a week until yesterday when I installed Rome total War. The mind boggles :)

Have you made sure its not a moniter problem?
Check using a diffirent moniter, and make sure its dugauzzed.
or else magnatism build up behind the screen will distort the colours

Did you install a 3rd party fan on your card? Sounds like ram overheating.

This happened to me when I was a little bit flush with thermal paste when putting on an arctic cooler before. My graphics card was bollixed. :(

Sounds like yours is too. I'd RMA it if I were you.

Not a monitor problem, I checked another monitor with it, plus there's clipping and major glitches in the games, not just colour distortion. I didn't put a 3rd party fan on it, was going to but decided against it. I've since cleared everything away from around the card and its still giving problems so I don't think its an overheating issue. I reckon the card is fubar. I'll get another week out of football manager and then I'll be winging it back to the shop!
