hi all. broke my finger tonight playing football, took pics but they didnt come out great. i strapped it up but i was just wondering how long i should leave it strapped. i assume its not like a broken leg/arm etc, ie 6 weeks. i did seek medical advice (my friend is a nurse), which concluded "dont bother going to the hospital, strap it yourself" this included instructions but forgot to ask for how long. needless to say im in a lot of pain.

I would go to see a Doc, if it is broken then it could be that the bone is out of place and will cause havoc when it heals.
boards has a rule somewhere that this is not a medical Site, but I would say it is common sense to see a Doc on this.
Your friend is a Nurse, not a Doctor, and allthough he might have dealt with a lot of cases, it can be much worse than he suggests.
even if spending hours to see a doc, go and do it.
fingers tend to take about 6 to 8 weeks to fully heal, btw

    I agree 100%!

It may just be a broken finger but it could need resetting and all!

Put it this way, Youd feel like a right pleb if it didnt heal right!Better be safe than sorry!

A trip to A&E is E55 and for that you'll get follow up out-patient care and even physio if required.

Go to the A & E Dept... It might need to be reset or else you'll loose the use of it if it sets like a curly pigs tail.
My sister broke her little finger and left it a few hours before going to the hospital. Now she can't straighten her finger properly cuz it set arse ways.

    Broke my arm last year
    Went to Beaumont
Seen within 10 minutes each visit to open clinic. X-Ray 10 minutes later, Out before the 1 hour mark on the carpark 2€.
Seen on the minute for appointments with occupational therapy
In my opinion first class service

My advice is to go, of course if your not in north Dublin you take your chances!

Well in the case of Beaumont (or any hossy) it depends a lot on who else is there and how much pain you are in.

I've waited up 8 hours one time to get an x-ray, only because I wasn't life threatening.

Well you'll know to start being a bit more menacing next time then.

I should clarify that I didn't attend A&E in Beaumont for the original break.

AFter the first week in cast I went along with my GP letter to get into the out patient clinic and then things went well. I do notice that when I go down to X-Ray which is in A&E I always get the x-ray in 5 or 10 minutes whereas I remember a time when I had a suspected broken bone waiting around for hours in A&E just to get referral for the x-ray. It would be great if you could pay say €50 euro for an x-ray yourself and then decide, depending on what you see in the x-ray, if your going to bother waiting around.

Or X-ray booths in the style of photomatons.
