The SUV question?

It seems that the green movement are more interested in attacking ordinary peoples lifestyles and not the real issues. The SUV myth is really a very soft fob off target to get headlines. I drive a landrover freelander 2.0 diesel (work purposes) which does 38-42 mpg, better than most medium to high end saloons. Some other makes in the mini SUV range do even better mileage again. Now wouldn't it be great if the post 60's crowd in the green party actually got up of their arses and lobbied the government to roll out biodiesel and TAX Breaks for Hybrid SUVs and Cars...but no...they go for the TAX hike punishment syndrome.

The thing that gets me is that the Anti "SUV" movement is just a Kneejerk reaction.
The US Anti-SUV movement is fighting against a motor industry where a 6-8 litre vehicle is not considered strange.
First of all this is Ireland not the USA and the same rules do not apply there as here.
Efficient diesel power in passenger vehicles is almost unknown in the US primarily due to the fact that the quality of diesel is very low, with a high sulfur content.
and Biodiesel might as well be unknown.
The situation here is basically a bunch of people who watch a bit of Television or maybe do a bit of websurfing and decide that they need to get on the bandwagon and start trying to ban 4x4's
and when could you see the shower that run this banana republic opting to not impose a tax?
They barely nodded in the direction of extremely fuel efficient vehicles such as the Prius and insight .
It makes my blood boil when I see the missed opportunities.

It's not just the cars themselves aside from the fact that some of them are almost trucks. IMHO the real purpose of a 4X4 is to allow the vehicle to cope with heavy terrain, not to drop kids off to school. In other words fine for driving at weekends in the fields. Personally I find the road behaviour from many SUV and 4X4 drivers extremely poor, ranging from inability to handle them to downright aggression (M1 racetrack  ). Sadly many of them are using these tanks for "work" puposes. So I'm all for banning them. The so called "perceived" need for them can be dealt with by using people carriers and minivans( not as sexy but cheaper to run and much smaller).

And then of course there are the gas guzzlers....................

EDIT Agree about the damn taxes for hybrids, 30K for a Prius

I think a fair solution is to do what the French do:
They have imposed an additional tax for offroad vehicles used in the urban environment ie Paris Toulouse etc.
This allows farmers and people who live in rural areas to have and use 4x4's but penalises Schoolrun mum types who just like driving a jeep to the school.
