Why? Why should I be arsed listening to someone tell me how fair they will be when an admin can usually reliably pick someone instead?

Boards.ie isn't a democracy. Iraq can have one.... but people going to vote tend to get shot. The same might happen here!

    Lol....

It works, people are happy, whats the problem?

Omnicorp- you are annoyed because of your previous little spat that got you banned- are you not? Were someone, the likes of yourself, elected mod, it would not insulate them from the actions of other moderators, who can, and have banned mods from their forums. One thing to keep in mind- a global ban from Boards is not from a mod- its from Admin....

Personally I do not see the need. You are right though- we do live in a democracy- even if Boards is not one. No-one is holding a gun against anyone's head though and insisting they log onto Boards.........

I think that some moderators can let power go to their heads.. (not naming names!)
Perhaps a rota system could be brought in. Mods could be changed every 6 mths or so. Just an idea...

Yeah, I agree, with both points made here.
6 months would be long enough for the person to take charge without being long enough to let said power go to their heads.

The election should take the form of a Royal Rumble and the last man standing takes the mod belt for that particular forum.

only for the wrestling forum...each forum has their own special way of getting voted.

I love to see how someone would win in the slydice specials...

I think this is a problem with society - people expect to get what they ask for and then wonder why they don't get it after they ask for it when they don't deserve it, leaving them in a state of bewilderment. Is the glass half empty or half full or is the glass just too big? Fruit baskets all round tbh...

Since this technocratic assembly is generally styled as a benevolent dictatorship, I suggest that the ministry of prisons haul off the dissidents, and useless threads like this be sent to a newly created forum:
    Dead Horses/Keep on Nagging.

If you enter it, you can't exit for 7 days.

People also have the right to say whether they think an opinion is silly.

I'm always amused by the power trip allegations that come up. What power, precisely, does a moderator have? What is it that makes them feel, in a comlainer's eyes, intrinsically better than the rest of the users? The ability to edit other peoples' posts? The ability to lock threads? You do realise that it's done to keep things in order, right? If you have a valid problem, you can get it sorted out. If nobody is listening, you should probably take the hint that what you're saying isn't worth hearing.

In any case, moderators are pretty much elected anyway. People suggest a name they feel would be good at the job, and the admins promote the one they think will do best. I'm sure the comparisons with the US Electoral College will keep some of you busy for a nice little while...

I'd be more in favour of a new boards monarchy as opposed to a benevolent dictatorship.

Throw this to the The Cuckoo's Nest....

You cant judge a mod until they are doing their job.

Actually, on boards.ie, free speech is a privilege, not a right. This is a privately owned forum after all.

If it were anyone else who reccomended this would the reaction be the same

Yes it would. Partly because boards is not meant to be a democracy, and partly because the idea is just plain stupid. Have you seen any other forum where this happens?
