Some Graphics Purchasing Advice

    hi there,
i just thought i'd better ask for a bit of advice here.

i want to get a new graphics card and don't really trust myself to make an informed decision all by myself, so i was wondering if anyone could advise on a good card for my system.

i was looking at this GeForce 6800 on komplett.

i basically want something that can handle whatever i throw at it today, and won't be too shaky in a year or two, as well as something that will survive a few updates of other components in the system in that time.

while i don't mind spending what i need to to get quality, around €340 is definitely my upper limit.

    i'm currently running:
    Abit NF7-S motherboard
AMD Athlon XP2700+ 2.17 GHz, not overclocked or anything
    512MB RAM (PC3200)
Gainward GeForce FX 5600 128MB card
    i've got a 360W PSU

cheers in advance for any helpful advice lads

well its definitly a huge leap up from the crappy 5600, but if you can afford it go for the 256meg version, preferably gt

AFAIK, this card is practically the same http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=300896&cks=PRL

I dont think that Gainward cards are worth the extra cost for a measly couple of MHz more. Id get the MSI and use the saved money to buy an NV Silencer with a couple of notes left over.

You wont be disappointed with it, the 6800s are solid cards

If you can get hold of one, get an x800XL - the replacement for the x800 pro. It's the same chip as the x800XT that sells for 450+ but at a lower clockspeed (and you can overclock it if you want).

Beats the 6800GT for less money.

thanks for the advice, ill look into it a bit more, i've got an order that should ship in a few days from komplett so ill decide on something before then.

the GT cards are a bit out of reach tbh, but that MSI card is a definite possibility, cheers padraigf
