Pat Kenny was made look a real clown last night!

I myself have stood up for Pat Kenny in the past and his interviewing techniques but last night was the final staw and confirmed to me that I have been in denial. His first interview guest was ex big brother contestant Brigitte Nelson and also Sly stallones ex. A couple of years ago she was interviewed by Patrick Kielty and she acted the major clown jumping up and down all night and calling him names, so I wondered how Irelands premier interviewer would handle the Danish woman.

Firstly she jumped onto the set proclaiming digity, digity, and wanting a big hug from Pat which she duely got. During the course of the interview Pat took every bit of her avoidence of questions, she took off her knee lenght boot and told Pat to put it on which he did then danced around the set with her wearing her one boot. In the middle of the interview she asked pat for a kiss which he gave her, and then for the rest of the interview she kept on crosing her legs (Sharon Stone Style) and then rested her legs on Pats knees for the rest of the interview.

She had all the hall marks of someone totally pissed and Pat proved that he has no backbone when interviewing. I sympathise with her that she got bad news before coming on to the show but there was no excuse for the way she acted, or the embaressment Pat kenny is as our number one interviewer hes afaid to ask any hard questions to any guests while they can plug and promote anything by any means on the show.

I seen it and I wanted to gouge my eyes out when I did.
Such total sh!t. He kept trying to bring up stallone, Jakie and her Hollywood career (!), in an effort to remind the audience and viewing public who the fck she was...
she didnt even want to talk about anything...

Hey, there was worse times than this! remember when freddie starr was on keny live (I think) and he made kenny wear his dirty yfronts...
    wat muck

Sound like I better catch the repeat showing!

Kenny has never been good on TV, some ppl are just not comfortable with it.
He always looks like he's nailed to a board, wheras say Jonathan Ross is total at home. He likes the camera.

    Mike.

I intially thought as well that she was p**sed until she spoke about her son and that made me wonder had she been drugged in some way to get through the interview. You're dead right in that Kenny has absolutely no back bone when interviewing.

Under the circumstances, I don't think she should have gone on the show at all. It was the worst interview I've seen since Dunphy & Jordan.

On a more positive note, although it looks like her health has failed in the last couple of years I thought Mo Mowlam was absolutely brilliant last night. She was witty, down to earth and an all round nice woman.

No I think thats just her interview 'schtick' so to speak. I remember she was on Fantasy Football League years ago (possibly during WorldCup98?) and she was like a total maniac. I seem to remember her flailing a large piece of meat or something equally bizarre? It was the only time I think Skinner&Baddiel have been lost for words.

Have to say tho I'm a little disspointed by this report after the promise of the thread title. I was hoping it'd be story along the lines of 'Pat poo's himself after successfully timing joke delivery for first time'

That Dunphy Jordan show was brilliant though! Poor Tommy Tiernan didn't know where to look!
Pat just can't cope with things that aren't fully prepared and learnt off.. imo. If things don't go according to plan you can just see him panicking.. not exactly the sign of a good interview host eh?!
I didn't see that part of the show, but did catch the whole "Posh and Becks" thing.. what tripe! She looked like she was trying to keep her lips closed but was wearing fake teeth or something! Terrible.

I found last night's interview even worse than when Jordan was on The Dunphy Show. Éamon Dunphy looked relaxed throughout the entire interview, and seemed to be enjoying it. Yes, Jordan made a twat of herself, but Dunphy handled it perfectly. Pat Kenny, on the other hand - I actually felt sorry for him. I'd react in exactly the same way, if faced with that kind of situation. The difference is, I don't subject myself to two hours of live television every week.

The management of RTÉ must be starting to ask questions about Kenny's future on the Late Late. The biggest problem they have, is the fact that there seems to be nobody out there to replace him. In which case, maybe they should cancel the Late Late Show altogether. It was 'of its time' and doesn't really hold any significance in 21st century Ireland. It should really have ended six years ago, when Gay Byrne hung up his microphone.

I missed it. But I saw the Posh & Becks impersonators and I said hey!

This is why we pay our licence fee money for - sheer quality.

God, I'm sorry I didn't see this now from ye're descriptions of it. Anything that makes Pat Kenny look like even more of an Alan Partridge-esque twat has to be fun to watch! :D

Sounds like it was even worse than Tara-Palmer-What'sherface on Frank Skinner's show a couple of years ago when she came on coked up to the f**kin' eyeballs! Now that was truly car-crash TV. Completely cringe-inducing to watch but, for some strange reason, you couldn't help but continue watching just to see what she was going to say or do next that would make her look like even more of an idiot! :D

I do think she was pissed or drugged! Whatever it was, he was completely unable to cope with her. He was just looking at her, with this bemused expression on his face. He wasn't much better with Mo Mowlam. In the end, she got bored with him and wandered down to the audience where she communicated far better with them than with Pat. Funny how both Brigitte and Mo preferred to interact with the audience than with the host. I can see RTE putting in the golden boy there in the next year or two!

Pat Kenny is a very shy man trying to hide it. I don't blame him as a person for not asking hard questions, or giving a lady a kiss when asked, he's so shy he basically hasn't got a choice. I'm a shy person and I find myself doing weird things when family friends are in the house so I can only imagine what it would be like in front of over half a million people. He doesn't want anyone to see he's shy so when asked to put the shoe, he wants to show people that he's not shy. He shouldn't be presenting such a big show though.

    what did mo do?

    she's usually quite funny?

should have never invited yer one on?

not just pat fault but rte's and george bush's :P

did you see some of the complaints were upheld against tommy tiernan :/

Speaking of Mo Mowlem, I was quite shocked when I saw her.. She needed Pat Kenny's help, walking and her speech was badly slurred. She doesn't look well at all

Pat Kenny is a twat, has always been a twat and shall forever remain, a twat. As for that Nielson bird, sounds like she had been playing with the Celebrity Sherbet.

there's no need for him to be "made" look like a clown.
he just is one. plain and simple.

First time flicking to the late late in ages and by god it'll be a while before i do it again! As some viewer's complaint in the sunday indo described it as "car crash t.v."

those posh and becks look alikes were woeful as well. heard the producer\leading star on gerry ryan show friday looking for Ray Burke and Mary Hearney lookalikes.....wont be going to that show.

oh dear god. i've just realised in the space of 3 days i indulged in the 3 worst examples irish media on all mediums ireland has to offer....:o

Does anyone have a tape of this episode. I thought when Pat was introducing the band after Brigiette that she was seen crawling at his leg when the camera pulled back to show Pat's full body. Anyone else see this? It was only for a fleeting second and then it went to the band - who were brutal.....

It was repeated last night. I watched the Nielson interview, and I had my hands covering my face for the whole thing... horrible TV.

    Bring back Dunphy.

You're right Enii - Nielson was crawling down at his feet at the end - none of the papers picked up on it either!

As a seasoned observer of the Late Late and how it has developed with Pat - don't ask why - I agree with some of the opinions here.
I constantly defend Pat, but the Nielson interview, like Freddie Star 4 years ago, was unacceptable.
I cannot cannot understand when Pat can clearly see that the interview will go down the tubes if he sticks to his notes, why he doesn't just relax and go with the flow. There is no point in trying to reign in people like Nielson, not only can it not be done, it is hugely distracting, not to mention embarrassing for the viewer to watch as he frantically tries to restore order.
And it's not as if he's not capable - he's fantastically relaxed on other occasions. I just cannot understand - I don't think any of the hoards of producers he's gone through have been able to change this, I suspect this is in part why he goes through them quicker than a box of Smarties.

To defend the Late Late, people constantly criticise it but mainly Pat as being formal etc. Hang on a second - there is a variety of chat formats, ranging from total comedy in the case of Graham Norton, to a mixture of humour and seriousness with Ross, and a more linear direct approach in the case of the Late Late. It's the nature of the show, not something to be compared unfavourably with other kinds of formats. Apples and Oranges.

What is annoying me though is the lack of debate on the programme & audience, it is scadalous how this elemnent has been virtually dropped in the past two years. This has happend without a peep from the media or other circles and is a crying shame. Pat can be excellent at chairing such debates too.

I finally saw the interview for myself last night and I have to say Neilsen (whilst undeniably nuts) came off a lot better than this thread might have indicated. More imporantly she came off better than Pat himself imho. He just cemented my opinion that he is a total jackass (on tv) and should really stick to radio interviewing politicians where he seems more comfortable and competent.

His segue to the closing topic of her sick kid was amateurish at best. Seeing as the week it was I'm surprised he didn't rhyme it later on in the with an interview with a holocaust survivor. He could have spent 10 minutes talking about football &weather and then closed it by asking 'So, tell us all about your family who were executed at Treblinka?'

Back on topic at on point Neilsen said to Pat 'i'd rather be sitting in the audience than with you'. I think it's the first time I've ever understood what the hell she was talking about.

Mostly agreed, but for the majority of items though I think he is quite good - a lot of criticism of Pat comes from young people or people who just don't like him and they intertwine their complaints about interviews with what they percieve as his negative mannerisims such as condescension etc. (not saying that's what people here are doing!)
But it's these people, who don't know him, who don't listen to his radio prog and rarely watch him on telly that form those opinions. Those who know him well, i.e the bulk of the prog's 600,000-650,000 viewers are well aware of how he operates.
People who flick on occasionally cannot stand him as a result. He's someone that needs to grow on you.

On balance though I wish he'd leave the Late Late - not because of the supposed benefit to that show, but for the benefit of television overall.
He's desperately needed in current affairs and popular debate once again. I'd love to see him chairing an interview and debate programme with a key person or panel every week and a large studio audience; a more active version of the BBC's Question Time.
He's stifling in his current position and there's not much time left either - he's said in the past he wants to retire at 60, he's 55/56 this month, don't know if it still stands...

Pat Kenny is a gimp...the only thing more embarresing about him being the national chat show host is that RTE is our national channell.....or posibly the fact that nothing can come close to replacing either of them....yes, thats it, the most emmbarresing thing is that kenny is in fact the nations top host and RTE is the premier channell...(please dont mention Tuberdy or TV3, they're somehow worse)

Look at the likes of Jay Leno or Johnathon Ross.....do we really not have a funny, charasmatic person in this country capable of conducting interviews in a light harted, take the p!ss manner, who can also carry a show and perform infront of an audience????

Jesu$, no wonder bertie is still taoesoch....an ounce of charisma, and your like a bloody legend in this country...even if you are an idiot..now all kenny needs is an ounce of charisma and he could be taoesoch...lol

Been a while since I saw RTE, but there used to be a guy called John something, with dark hair and a Nordie accent that presented some kind of arts or current affairs show, possibly with the word 'Night' or 'Train' in it (although that's laughably vague, I'm confident someone will know who I'm talking about). Himself and the chap that did (does?) the Blizzard of Odd, while possibly not what the LLS requires, are at least charismatic and witty.
