No they are stand up people mostly, I cant speak for them all obviously just like any other proffesion, doctors, dentists etc. The practise of inventing bids genrally does not happen.

This appears to be another disgrunted member of the pubic who's grudge is against estate agents.

Firstly Estate agents act on behalf of the person selling the house not the person buying the house, the agents job is to get the best price for the seller not to sell at the lowest price to the buyer. Estate Agents act on orders from the seller so if your bid isn't enough for the seller then bid some more!!

Estate agents want to sell property more than anyone else because their mainly paid on commision, If you think the Estate Agent is inventing bids ring up under a differant name and ask what the bid on the property is at the moment,

It dosen't matter either way its the sellers final decision weather the property will be sod or not not the Estate Agent. If you were selling a property would'ent you want the best price too.!!!

It's a ridiculous question. How old are you exactly? Is this for a transition year project?

have worked for an auctioneer yes they are a crock of sh** but no have never seen them inventing another buyer to push the price up because of the "well sell it to them" scenario you risk losing too much
    gonk

in what way are they a crock of ****?
i wonder whether bid ramping goes on in the sticks though where everyone knows someone? and people seem more dodgy and dont talk straight. have seen this alot in country folk or maybe its just me. i certainly doubt it goes on in dublin though.

I seem to remember a Prime Time documentary where a woman in Sandyford was basically pressurised into selling her house by an agent for less than she wanted. Turns out the agent's girlfriend was the bidder.. The woman relented and sold the house and it only came up after that the agent and the bidder were involved.

We all know they are making a living but survey after survey will show that as a profession they do have the smell of snake oil off them. The argument that they are working in the interest of the client is only partly true. A flat fee for a sale would take some of the price pressure out of the crazy property market in this country.

Don't blame the evil oul agent. When you come to sell your house, you'll want the agent to squeeze every last drop of blood out of your buyers.

Buyers have to understand that the bidding war is a double-edged sword. Buyers love the option of bidding low, but then get all uppity when the price rises. If you don't want to play that game, tell the agent up-front that you're not going to get into a bidding war. Bid what the house is worth to you as your 'best & final offer' - If you get it for that price, great - If you don't, walk away and keep searching.

well my boss was a crock of ****. I was moving and asked him to sell my house but told him I was selling it too myself. I sold the house myself through the buy & sell and he took money out of my final wages for his commission even though it was "no foal no fee" and he was just obnoxious to work for. I have friends who who work for auctioneers and they say their bosses are obnoxious too....rant over ;)

Hi Gonker - You should take action through a Rights Commissioner to reclaim your proper wages. See Dept Enterprise & Employment webpage re. salary deductions

oh I am but it shows how much of an a~~hole he is. It was bad enough leaving a job I loved (not the employer) and an area I loved without that happening too....
    Thanks for that

I don't know why we need them anymore. Theyre just a middleman. Surely the net ala myhome.ie etc can replace them??
