Heres a question for all. My favorite armys have always been the ones that are hard to use and need lot of thought behind them (and a wide choice). I'm going to start gaming again and well im looking for opinions on 40k armies, ive been out of tounch for a while, and well are the imperail guard like they used to be, hard to use but if used correctly they can and will crush evreything in there path. i would use eldar but i collect high elves. so i wouldnt bother. I problay will stick with imperail guard but. well can i get opinions of the armies you have used and what u belive to be there weakness's and strenghts.

To all mankind. We will survive!

I've played with pretty much every 40k army bar Orks, and to be honest, with the new codexes coming out, you can go for pretty much any playstyle with any force.

Chaos, Marines and IG had a lot of customisation ability in their new codexes.

If you want an army that will give you a challenge, what about something like the Lost and the Damned or the 13th Company from the Eye of Terror codex. Nice themed armies, but I have my doubts to their competition effectiveness.

Some would say that Dark Eldar are a hard army to win with, but I know for a fact you can do up a boat heavy army that can slaughter almost anything in a single turn.

Currently I'm playing with my Berserkers. I plan to take them to Conflict and LepreCon .. no shooting weapons heavier than bolt pistols. Khorne favours the taking of skulls.

Ive only got the 3rd etdtion IG codex and a chaos along witha few other marines (spits) yuk overgrown girlys dressed in armour would theyrun into battle wearing aflak jacket huh. i think not. If i work an amry list of that codex how close would it be to the new codex's rules etc. its just over the next two weeks ill be buying either codex riulebooks or models perfreably the latter. but id like to make sure.

The 3rd ed books are a good starting point, but you really want to get the more recent printings to make the most of your army(s). Chaos, IG and Marines have all had new codexes, with a fair ammount of new stuff in there.

i know there will be new stuff ut what i want to know is, if i picked and collected 500pts worth of IG using the 3rd edtion codex. wouldit be playable in 4rt edition. what i mean is when they updated the second edition to 3rd edtition there was complete overhaul. and most armies and weapons for 2nd edition became obsolete. Will it be the same.

No. 4th Edition is basically version 3.5 - most it (from what I've seen thus far) is fairly similar.

I've read the book. As far as I can make out, there's very little changed regarding kitting your troops out, the changes were mostly in the mechanics of the game, like with troop transports (not being able to assault after disembarking is a blow for your Berzerkers, but being able to rapid fire instead is great for your Tactical squads!) and close combat (and I must say it looks a lot less complicated this time round).

I've only seen the Space Marine Codex, unsurprisingly, and the only real equipment change was that some bits are now included as standard on the model, like the Apothecary's medical devices and whatnot. A 3rd ed army will most likely be identical under the "new" rules.

I've skimmed through the 3rd and 4th ed codices of Space Marines and Imperial Guard and it's as the lads said - pretty much the same army list wise, just modifications to the game's mechanics and tidying of rules that by various new model and rules releases have exposed beardy possibilities (boo!) and stuff like that. I'd much prefer to loose with an army that's "in character" than win with a "power gamer" army. I'd claim the moral victory! :)
