Subject: [Allstudents] Urgent: 195 Euro for Sports Complex
    Dear Students

As you know, the swimming pool and new sports facilities are set to open
from the beginning of Semester 2.

Governing Authority has already stated that students would be given
maximum levels of access, and that a service level agreement would be
drawn up. Unfortunately, this agreement has not materialised, we were
not consulted on pricing, and our suggestions were also ignored.

The board of management for the Sports Complex (on which students have
no representation) has proposed a flat fee of €195 for 12 months
membership. This appears to be a reasonable fee for membership of
equivalent commercially run facilities. However, we think that very few
students (and staff) will be able to pay this lump sum up front.

We have suggested a more equitable payment scheme, breaking the year
    into three 4-month sections (Oct-Jan, Feb-May, Jun-Sep). Members would
either pay between €70 and €80 per period OR the full 12-month
membership of €195. This scheme was rejected without a good explanation
other than the facility's need to break even.

We're not happy that students will be asked to fork out nearly €200 in a
lump sum. We are VERY concerned about this attitude towards students.
We've all been waiting for this facility for a long time, but students
on INTRA, semester abroad students, final-year students and most
postgraduate students will be discriminated against by this inequitable
    policy.

DCUSU does not advocate harassment of Sports Complex staff or a boycott
of the facilities, that just hurts the people working in the complex who
    don't set the prices.

If you agree with us, please copy and paste the mail below, add any
comment you like and send the mail to letters@dcusu.ie, and these mails
will be passed onto the board of management.

This is urgent, so please mail us

    Dear Campus Sport

As a student of DCU I would like to object to the proposed fee structure
being implemented for the use of the new sports facilities. It is
unreasonable to ask students to pay a lump sum of €195 for the use of
    the new facilities.

I demand that you implement a system of phased payments which allows
students to pay on a semesterly basis (or in 3/4 month periods), and
does not lock them into a 12 month membership which they do not need.
This system will allow all students to access the facilities in a fair
manner, and will not penalise students studying or working outside of
DCU (INTRA, Nursing Placement, Semester Abroad Students, Part-time
    students, Final Year Students)

    ***ANY OTHER COMMENTS***

    Yours Sincerely

So they want to squeeze 200 quid out of us for a swimming pool and a gym with broken gym equipment and no squat rack...

Yeh no fuppin way am I shelling out 200 quid to use the damn yoke. I reckin it was assumed it would be like the way the gym is now, pay as you go kinda thing.

Paul May's suggestion is DREADFUL. If we're paying that much per 3 months it'll cost more and won't be as handy at all so I don't know why he thinks this is such a great idea...

€70 for 3 months is extremely generous. For a full membership in any other club it would be at least €40. Will there be an entry fee for every use or is the €200 the only cost?

I assume his logic is that you won't pay for the summer months, so 3 x €70 = €210. He doesn't seem worried about the price overall, just the fact you have to pay it in one lump sum.

Of course that would still make it cheaper to join for 12 months assuming you'll be back in dcu next year...

Isn't the ucd gym €300 a year for students? But then again that has a decent gym...

While the €200 itself seems reasonable enough, I think it is a bit much to expect students to be able to pay it all in one go and leave no other options. What about postgrads and final year students? Why should we have to fork out for an entire year when we will only be there for another half year?
They don't seem to have put much thought into this. They will have to change it if as I suspect the only people able to use the gym from now on will be lecturers, college staff and a few students whose parents can afford it.

Very disappointing after waiting so long for it to finally open.

And if this is all they're going to be adding to the gym, then it won't be worth it...

    The University Sports Club

    Ken Robinson, Chief Executive

Earlier this academic year the university decided to put the management of our sports facilities under a DCU company structure and to appoint a Chief Executive to manage them. I would like to introduce myself to you and express my delight at taking up the post of Chief Executive of Campus Sport Ltd. I have joined a dynamic and committed team and one which will be expanded over time. I look forward to developing the range of sports facilities here in the university, both indoor and outdoor.

Sport has a critical role to play in the life and future development of DCU. This role is supported by the University strategic plan, ‘Leading Change’, when it states among its main objectives that ‘the quality of social and campus life in DCU, and the promotion of student well-being, will be regarded as a strength of the university’. In addition to this contribution to the holistic development of students, sport is also important for our public profile and has significant implications for student recruitment.

In order to facilitate these objectives quality facilities are fundamental and the new University Sports Club, incorporating the new swimming pool, fitness centre and current sports facilities will open on Monday February 7th. We are also undertaking a refurbishment plan within the current sports facilities.

While the role of Campus Sport will be the management and development of our sports facilities, the Sport & Recreation Service will continue as heretofore within Student Affairs, and will continue to be responsible for facilitating the widest possible participation in sport by our students, developing our sports clubs, supporting elite sportspersons (including managing the scholarship scheme), and liaising with the management of the sports facilities regarding access to the facilities for our sports clubs and for university sports events.

    The new facilities will include:

    Wet Side

    • 25 metre, 5 lane swimming pool (depth 1.07m – 1.50m)
    • Tepidarium
    • Sauna
    • Steam Room
    • Footbaths
    • Spa Pool
    • Pulse showers

    Dry Side
