Internet via satellite

Eircom left me with a faulty landline for over a fortnight and when they repaired it the internet speed had decreases to nearly zero. It was always pretty poor, at the best of times. I don't really need the phoneline except for internet access. I remember this subject was discussed on the forum before, but something new may have come up since.
I've got an 80cm motorised sat system.
Can anyone recommend or got experience of a good reasonably priced wireless system that will not need a phone line?
That way I can tell Eircom where to stick their line.

Sadly, you won't be able to tell Eircom to stick their line. Most satellite services are one way (i.e. download only). The uplink is via a normal telephone connection, i.e. you dial your ISP, connect to the satellite provider and tell it what to download via the satellite.

There are two way satellite services, but these are much more costly.

Have a look over on the Net/Comms boards and the Ireland Offline board for some enlightening views on satellite from the CEO of a satellite provider in Ireland.

    Thanks tom.
    I was afraid of that.
I'll certainly have a look at those boards.
