Just want to ask, has anyone purchased anything from this website www.ny-camera.com (Digital Wonder World).
Im just asking because ive seen a Canon Digital camcorder for a really good price and noticed that they require a lot of your details, they even want you to fax them your credit card picture front and back and a passport for proof of identidy
no probs, a such but when i ordered it they wanted my security number from the back of the card sent by e-mail even though i entered it on the website.
Is this company legit. i just want to know, if anyone has delt with them before.

    Thanks.

Some of these germans are awful fúckin idiots. There is a music shop that puts their customers through the same crap. Tell him to phone you for the number if he wants to make a sale, see if he's bothered. (They went bankrupt and reopened recently, so I'd assume they need the business.) Also complain to your credit card company, see what they say about these practices.

im just worried that they may use my CC for fraud. activities, like why do they need a pix of my credit card, is'nt the number not good enough for them.

They're german and don't like using a fully insured payment system like credit card for whatever reason. A friend of mine is getting a camera from them too and I said to him not to do the bank transfer under any circumstances. Sure they are a legitimate company, but should go tits up again while your money is sitting in their account and the order is being processed, do you think you'd ever see any of it again? No.

So do jump through the hoops with the credit card, other people have and there aren't any problems, it's just thick paranoid companies who don't seem to want to accommodate the way their international customers do business (cc transations are not so common in Germany). Stick something over your signature if you want, make sure you let them know you think they're from the dark ages and tell your credit card company. Maybe after 1000s and 1000s of people complain they might wake up to the fact that everything is insured.

    end rant ;)

No. Frankly if you give me your real name chances are I could give them your cc number...

A fax/scan is necessary 'cos Irish banks won't verify addresses, AFAIK it's a data protection issue.

Bottom line is that this is standard practice for firms without Irish offices.

well aslong as there legit, im not going to fax anything over to them as im sure they should find that all my e-mail, address, telephone numbers all come to the same name--ME, so that should be insurance enough for them.

Just noticed they had no SSL, just incase ill contact the Bank of Ireland to monitor debits by this crowd, thanks for the info BTW.

I've only ever heard of this being an issue with ny-camera and thomann.de Personally I haven't encountered it with thomann orders (high value first time order) which implies that it is a rather inconsistent standard practice that they have, though it happens quite a lot with ny-camera. It hasn't happened at all with other foregin companies that I've dealt with.

Right ill send the passport info then, to be sure

i've done it with legitimate american companies without problem

but i would recomend not dealing with ny-camera

they closed down less than 6 months ago making loads of ustomers lose money, some who had ordered pro gear losing the thousands they spent

they reopened with a different named owner but still the same people working for them
so it's quite possible the same thing will happen again

I was wondering about that. I hadn't been on the site for a while. From any feedback I've seen here (in the past) I'd say steer clear.

I guess the only thing to worry about is if they send you the camera after you've ordered it from another store. You'd have to send it back and get them to credit your card, if they refuse you just go to the disputes guys in BOI CC department and they'll sort it out once you show them copies of all the emails etc.

Tbh, I wouldn't have backed out. Once you are paying by credit card everything is insured, if you don't get the goods in 30 days you file for a charge back and your money is returned to you. Yes they did go down the tubes and screwed a lot of people, but they're back now, you claim they're the cheapest about, your purchase is safe when on the credit card, so why not?

    Rob

(btw, if you are travelling to New York, you'd save even more money buying the camera over there: www.bhphotovideo.com)

I backed out only because my gut feeling told me to and after reading a few posts above id rather be safe, if they do send it anyway i may keep it, but will have the card cancelled by then just to be sure. Because i sent a scan of my card and a driving licience which has my address on it there is nothing stoping him ordering stuff through the web with my details, and with his previous record i would'nt trust him with my information, im cancelling the card on friday after i find that another transaction not related to this issue is cleared.

Just was thinking if i sent the infomation to that Weinmann guy why did'nt the other guy know, for all i know mr or Dr. Weinmann may have printed my details and put them straight into his pocket, afterall a person like him would do anything to pay off outstanding debts he owes to companies. Mabey im exagerating but you never know.

I had the same issue with B and H in New York so it's not just the smaller online retailers. I was going with another place in the US but they messed up my order and the moron didnt even take my email address down correctly after I spelled it out for him so I didn't get their emails about the problem. They wanted my bank to ring them to confirm my ID. Morons. B&H were really good to deal with and it was just one hastle of faxing the pictures of my card to them.

Right ive heard nothing back from digiwowo.net and i checked my CC account to see if money had been taken out from them and they hav'nt YET.
Anyway I ordered a DV camcorder from pixmania.com the irish part of the website and got a JVC camcorder for €340 (cheapest price ive seen) and it arrived today at lunchtime and i only ordered it from them tuesday night, also got 2 green tags for holding stuff around yer neck i presume, anyway id recommend it to anyone check there prices.
Go to Google type in cheap camcorders and click on the 1st sponsered link, thats how i found them.
