    Hi,
I'm trying to remove an external HD (its an iriver ihp-140 mp3 player) it is not busy but when I click to remove it, it says it cannot be removed now and to try later. I've tried again and again but it wont say "you can now safely remove" is it ok to remove or will it damage something? What can i do to make it give me the all clear?
    thansk!

Anything which may be linking to the drive, ie open programs that just accessed it ect will cause windows to say that. As a general rule its good to disconnect properly but i have never seen loss or corrupted data from removal without disconnecting. (note: in saying that ive never disconnected a portable HD) anyways try and eject it by clicking on the drive in My computer (right click on the symbol) if that dont work consult the readme and troubleshooting guide with the drive

afaik once write-caching is disabled on the drive then its ok(more or less) to just pull it out as all the data has been written to the drive already.

ok thanks. When it happened i just took the safe route and restarted the computer with it still hooked up. I was able to dc it fine when it rebooted.

That's happened to me once or twice Cormie. I've just disconnected it anyway and it's been fine.

It's happened more than the once and I've had no problems so far but just checking to see if there is a definite way to just get it to safely remove it. As long as it doesn't cause any big problems its cool:)

Any time it happens to me i just make sure that i have any programs & explorers closed and thats usually enough to let it disconnect.

Just make sure you're not viewing the iRiver in Windows Explorer when you're trying to disconnect. I find I have the same problem as you if this is the case. Usually, it takes 2 tries to disconnect my iRiver anyway. Great little machine

    Don't you mean MyRiver? hehe

I had all windows/programmes closed, just mouse pointer and the desktop active, and a few programmes in the taskbar.
