Is it possible to use the usb port to attach a cd-recorder for the purpose of backing up data?

I need to know because my existing internal cd-recorder will not record and I cannot get it to go.

If I can use an external cd-recorder do I need to load new software onto my hard drive? Or does it have its own software? Will there be a conflict with the existing internal cd-recorder so that I have to remove it entirely first?

My PC is a Compaq 5030 with ME installed in place of the original WIN95 I bought it with and the existing internal cd-recorder is also not the original CDROM.

I do have a USB port but have never used it.

A USB external drive is not an ideal solution as they are slow and error prone, the standard nowadays is the far faster USB2.0 or Firewire interfaces which your computer doesn't possess. My advice is to buy an internal DVD/CD combi-drive and replace it yourself. Don't worry about not having opened your computer before, if you can fuse a plug you can almost certainly manage this; Google for information and you'll be sure to find step by step instructions with diagrams.
As for the new drive, Peats in Parnell street are doing some decent deals DVD/CD writers at the moment or, if you don't live in Dublin, try komplett.ie
