Hi, built a new machine a couple of months back, been playing audio cd's no problem in the dvd drive. Just tried the other day to play a dvd movie for the first time and though I got a picture I didn't get sound? When I originally built the pc there was a problem with the processor I bought so I gave it to a mate to look at. I had at the time a cable connecting from the digital connector on the primary dvd drive to the soundcard. Twas missing off it when I got it back from my mate  , but as I got the machine working shortly after this and it seemed to play cd's fine didn't see the need for it. So anyone know why I get sound on cd's but not on dvd's?

    Cheers

    Dken

I dont think you need it, i dont use it anyway.
You might have to have a look in the options for the drive, not sure where they are on this pc (win98) but in xp its in my computer right click the drive for properties and then have a look there (forget the next bit).
I could be something else im not sure but worth a look
And get that cable back of your mate!

EDIT: just read the last bit of your post, could be an option in your dvd playing software. Not sure cant help you there

Didn't think it would be the cable if cd's play. I'll check my drive properties and software setup tonight, methinks it maybe the software setup, was using windows media player so shouldn't be too much of a surprise! . I'll install power dvd this evening and give that a go. As to the cable my mate swears there was nothing there, which probably means he took it out along with some other stuff and lost it! Wouldn't mind but he had the damn thing 2 weeks and still didn't work when I got it back, not too mention he somehow managed to crack the keyboard?? Anyway, old saying springs to mind.. "If you want something done right ..." etc etc :D

    Cheers mate

You definitly don't need the cable, older systems used to use it for playing audio cds, kind of like running a cable from the headphone socket on a cd player to a line in on the soundcard. Nowadays cd drives just read the digital data from audio cds and that gets played through whatever program.

Definitely doesnt need an audio connection afaik.

Maybe its the codecs/program or in fact just the drive itself.
I have a plextor drive and its only connected thru IDE and molex...no sound probs...try copying the dvd to you hard drive and playing it from a folder if you get stuck.
