I just opened up a thread with useful links that I've come across that should explain everything you need to know.

    Alright where to start....

Touchdown = 6 points Field Goal Conversion = +1 point 2 point Conversion= attempted run or pass into end zone instead of a field goal conversion

Safety = 2 points (tackling the opposing team in their own end zone)

o.k the game starts with a team kicking off:
If the ball is kicked into the opposing teams end zone either they can run it out and try to gain yards or simply touch the ball off the ground for what is called a touchback which means they automatically get to start from their own 20 yard line (which is good considering how fast the special teams players are)...Therefore the goal for the kicking team is to kick the ball as close as possible to the end zone without actually putting it in it or past it.

now onto 'Downs', after the kickoff from where ever they get the ball to they have to start their offense and get their first Down, Downs work in a set of fours. for the first down the goal is to get the ball past 10 yards to gain another first down, they have 4 downs to do this, however teams tend to rely on 3 downs to try and get another 1st down as if they fail on their Fourth Down the ball is turned over to the other team letting their offense get the ball with good field position. so teams use the fourth down for either a punt which is just kicking the ball down the field as far as possible so the opposing team starts as far back as possible or if there close enough they can use it for a field goal attempt

Turnovers...Turnovers are win a teams defense wins possesion of the ball back from the opposing teams offense, this can happen when the offense fumbles (drops the ball) the ball or has a pass intercepted (a throw is caught by a defensive player)

Quarterback Sack = When the quarterback is tackled by the defense (its a keeper stat for defensive players, such as Third Down Conversions are for an offense)

You know what theres too much to the game, If you have any specific questions just ask, I'd advise you learn from watching..though you don't have much time left this season

Ah don't give up now, you're doing great!!

    Some points:

    - Fieldgoal is worth 3 points
    - Teams are allowed 3 timeouts per half
    - If a pass is incomplete (ie hits the ground without being caught or intercepted) the clock stops
    - If the player with the ball runs out of bounds, the clock stops
    - You cannot pass the ball forward once you cross the line of scrimmage (the imaginary line drawn across where ball is snapped at the beginning of each play)
    - QB can only pass the ball to running backs, wide receivers or the tight end.

After a punt the reciever can call a fair catch which means the ball is played from where it is caught

With the punt- how do they call it a fair catch? Does the receiver shout or somethin? Its something that I've wondered for a while

He just waves his hand over his head signalling he wants a shot at the fair catch. No one can tackle him but he can't advance with the ball.

one or two more(hope there right!)

-as soon as a players knee hits the ground(either one) the play is over, so if a player drops to his knees and drops the ball it isnt a turnover
    - a player must touch the gorund with both feet in the field of play before going out of bounds.
-if a kickoff is straight out of play the recieving team starts from their own 40yard, line, if a punt is kicked out it is started from wherever the ball goes out.

There's an excellent book out called "One knee equals two feet". It was written by John Madden and some other guy, and it explains the rules quite well, without acting like a text book.
